Craft’s Game-winner Caps Lady Traiblazers’ Escape Act in Topping SE Illinois 70-68

November 23, 2009

Vincennes Lady Trailblazers point guard Megan Craft capped off VU’s 70-68 escape artist act against visiting Southeastern Illinois Monday night by getting to the rim surprisingly easy – pretty much unimpeded – and her layup put VU up with less than a second to play when Lady Falcons Coach Rod Wallace called timeout.

After the break, Southeastern failed to even get a shot off in the .3 seconds that remained and a tired VU squad that had travelled Sunday from a two-day tournament in Panama City, Fla., had gotten away from Southeastern Illinois.

Freshman Deanna Thompson led the Lady Trailblazers with 21 points. Craft finished with all 11 of her points in the second half and sophomore forward Misty Wynn had 10.

Dameika Mitchell paced the Lady Falcons with 20.

Craft’s only 3-pointer of the night put VU up 41-36 early in the second half and freshman Charae Richardson’ old-fashioned three-point play, coupled with a Wynn bucket, helped the Lady Trailblazers maintain some cushion as they attempted to beat Southeastern Illinois for the third time in November.

But the Lady Falcons refused to surrender and had pulled within one at 53-52 with just less than 6:00 to go. Thompson tried to keep the Lady Trailblazers out front with a pair of free throws but Courtney Smith’s trey propelled Southeastern Illinois ahead 62-61 with 3:23 remaining.

The lead for the Lady Falcons was compliments of a 21-9 run before VU sophomore MyQueisha Bratton drilled a 3-pointer right at the 1:00 mark to tie the game at 66 and put the outcome in the hands of the team with the best strategy and execution down the stretch.

Smith got to the line with 42 seconds to go and hit both free throws, but Craft answered at the other end when she penetrated and got fouled. Two free throws of her own knotted it up again at 68 and set the stage for the heroics to come after a couple more timeouts.

At the Southeastern Illinois end of the floor, VU’s Jasmine McGhee and Mitchell got tangled up and the official called a double-foul with 13 seconds to go. It was Mitchell’s fifth foul, but the ball stayed with the Lady Falcons. Kendra Kimbrew missed a jumper and Richardson corralled the rebound, before Meeks called the fateful timeout that led to Craft’s game-winner.

VU heads to Olney Central Wednesday for a 5:30 p.m. (Vincennes time) tip-off against the Lady Blue Knights. The Lady Trailblazers then return to action after the Thanksgiving holiday by hosting the Sodexo Classic Dec. 3-5.
