Standards of Student Behavior

Academic Dishonesty

Academic dishonesty includes plagiarism, cheating, submitting another person's material as one's own, or doing work for which another person will receive academic credit. The benchmarks of any great college are directly related to standards of academic endeavor on the part of both teacher and student. It is in this relationship that truth and honesty are recognized as fundamental to a university community. The University expects students to adhere to these principles and in so doing to foster the ideals for which the University was founded. Put simply, this means that the student will do his/her own academic work. For violations under this section, the professor will notify the department chairperson and the division dean in writing of the circumstances if any punitive action is taken. The student shall have the right of appeal of the professor's decision per the Student Grievance Policy. The alternatives for action by the professor may include, but not be limited to, failing grade of the assignment, or the course, or the withdrawal from the course. The student will also be referred to the Dean of Students, who will determine appropriate disciplinary action in keeping with procedures used in the handling of other types of student conduct situations.

Responsible Freedom

The moral norm which guides conduct and informs policy at Vincennes University is responsible freedom.  Freedom is an important experience which the University provides for all of its citizens: faculty, students, administrators, and staff. With freedom comes responsibility.  Freedom is responsibly exercised when it is directed by ethical standards.

The VU Creed

Vincennes University is a community dedicated to personal and academic excellence and growth.

Behavior
In joining this learning community, I commit to a code of civilized behavior.

Excellence
I will practice personal academic integrity.

Respect
I will respect the dignity of all persons, including myself; I will respect the rights of others; I will not condone bigotry;

Diversity
I will strive for the openness to learn from differences in people, ideas, and opinions.

Citizenship
I will demonstrate concern for others, their feelings, and their need for conditions which support their work and development.  Allegiance to these ideals requires me to refrain from behavior that threatens the freedom and respect every individual deserves.
