About VU
Founded in 1801, VU is embarking on its third century of providing top-quality education. VU
is Indiana's first college and is one of the oldest in America. It is the birthplace of one of the
nation's first two-year institutions of higher learning. VU is one of Indiana's seven
state-supported institutions of higher education.
Basic Mission
VU is a public, two-year, comprehensive, community college featuring a full-service student
residential environment. Our primary mission is to provide associate degree and certificate
programs in a wide variety of academic and occupational majors leading to entry to a four-year
university or directly into the workforce.
Vincennes Campus
Situated on the banks of the Wabash River, the 150-acre VU campus features modern buildings
constructed of red brick. Adjoining the campus is the 1803 home of VU's founder, William Henry
Harrison, ninth President of the United States. The campus is undergoing one of the largest
expansions in its history with the construction of a new theatre and a recreation building,
complimenting several new technology facilities.
Location
Vincennes is situated approximately 120 miles southwest of Indianapolis at the junction of
U.S. highways 41 and 50. Vincennes is midway between the cities of Evansville and Terre Haute.
Leadership
The VU Board of Trustees has the legislative authority for the operation of the University.
The Trustees have the final determination in all matters concerning University policy, employee,
and fiscal matters. The Governor of Indiana appoints nine Trustees to serve three-year terms and a
Student Trustee to serve a one-year term.
Employee Representation
VU has more than 900 employees. They are represented through three governing bodies: the
University Senate of the Faculty, the Professional Staff Congress, and the Support Staff
Council.
Degrees Offered
In 2003-04, VU conferred more than 1,200 degrees in Arts, Science, and Applied Science, plus
Certificates of Graduation and Certificates of Program Completion. VU offers the first two years
that will provide the academic foundation for completing virtually any baccalaureate degree.
Tuition
VU remains the most affordable of all Indiana state residential colleges--by a significant
margin. The 2003-04 tuition (and fees) for in-state students is $106.27 per credit hour.
Enrollment
Vincennes campus enrollment as of October 2003 was approximately 4,600 students. System-wide
enrollment was more than 8,000, which includes both the Vincennes and Jasper campuses as well as
the VU Aviation Technology Center in Indianapolis, the Indiana School for the Deaf in Indianapolis,
and other off-campus locations. VU students come from all 92 Indiana counties, 23 other states, and
29 foreign countries.
Admissions
VU maintains an "open door" admissions policy. Students are eligible for admission on the
basis of graduating from an accredited high school, successful completion of the GED, or transfer
in good standing from an accredited college. Prospective students will find that VU offers more
than 150 majors and options, thus providing a full range of career choices upon graduation.
Visiting Campus
"Pre-VU Days" are scheduled in the spring and fall to offer campus tours,
discussions with faculty; and access to representatives from housing, parent services, support
services, financial aid, and more. Additionally, individual visits are always welcome and may be
scheduled through the Admissions Office by calling toll-free at 1-800-742-9198, or by visiting the
VU web site: www.vinu.edu.
Financial Aid
Approximately two-thirds of the students enrolled at VU receive some type of financial aid
from federal, state, or university sources. The financial aid application for VU is the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which you can get from your high school counselor or
by calling the VU Financial Aid Office.
Residential Life
VU has six modern, air-conditioned residence halls offering the best possible housing
arrangements for students. Approximately 41% of VU students reside in six campus residence halls.
VU's on-campus dining facilities feature a wide array of menu options and provide
restaurant-quality food.
Intercollegiate Athletics
VU has a well-rounded, highly competitive intercollegiate sports program. The men's and
women's teams are extremely competitive on a national level and have won several national
championships. A number of VU students have been named All-Americans and All-American
Academics.
Student Organizations
VU has three sororities for women and three fraternities for men. VU also has more than 40
clubs and organizations representing a wide range of interests.
Student Recreation
Among the more significant assets of VU are its outstanding athletic facilities and
recreation programs. The Physical Education Complex features an 18-lane bowling center, a new
fitness center, racquetball courts, swimming pool, archery range, dance studio, and a 2,600-seat
basketball arena. VU also has many excellent tennis and basketball courts and numerous outdoor
track, soccer, volleyball, and softball facilities. A multi-purpose Student Union offers a food
court, billiards, and offices for student government. The quality of these and other amenities
makes VU's recreational opportunities comparable to any major university.
Library
The Learning Resource Center is a modern, full-service facility with more than 100,000 print
volumes and 300 Internet-connected computers. The library also accommodates a Student Assessment
Center for computerized testing and placement, a Center for Teaching and Learning, a Technology
Training Center, two multimedia classrooms, and the Lewis Historical Library.
Media
VU is the home of WVUT-TV Channel 22 and radio stations WVUB (91.1 FM) and WFML (96.7 FM).
Students also produce a weekly student newspaper, The Trailblazer. The VU Vision is a bi-weekly
publication for employees.
Alumni Association
With nearly 35,000 VU alumni, the Alumni Association seeks to foster goodwill and
to encourage past graduates to support and serve the University and to identify ways the university
can continue to serve its alumni.
VU Foundation
The mission of the VU Foundation is to further the success of VU through the acquisition,
management, and administration of resources that help provide the "margin of excellence." With
assets of $15 million and $2.4 million in trust, the Foundation's current goal is to raise $10
million by the end of 2006. Donations will support scholarship and technology endowments, faculty
development, commemorative structures, facilities improvements, and unrestricted funds.
