You must appear IN PERSON at our office to register to take the G.E.D.

You may register ONLY between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Read the following information carefully and completely!

ELIGIBILITY:  All Examinees must have resided in Indiana for at least 30 days immediately prior to testing.

17 years of age MUST supply: 1.) an EXIT interview form (from high school), 2.) a copy of their practice test results signed by an ABE or GED instructor. 

NOTE:  In addition, effective July 1, 2006, candidates who are 17 years old may not test UNLESS they dropped out of public school due to ONE of the following:

  • Financial hardship - Student must obtain full employment to help support the family
  • Serious illness - Student dropped out of public high school due to serious illness
  • Court Order - Student has been ordered by a Judge to obtain their G.E.D. diploma

IDENTIFICATION: Examinees MUST show THREE FORMS of positive identification. One must be a photo ID, two must bear the examinees signature. (Drivers license, photo ID, Social Security card, one can be a bill, paycheck stub, etc.)

REGISTRATION: Examinees MUST pre-register, pay their fee, and make an appointment to test, IN PERSON! IDENTIFICATION WILL BE CHECKED AT REGISTRATION AND ON TEST DAY. NO WALK-INS WILL BE TESTED ! YOU SHOULD REGISTER AT LEAST ONE WEEK IN ADVANCE. You must also fill out the DEMOGRAPHICS form when you pre-register.

TEST FEE : $60.00 CASH - payable upon pre-registration at the VU Bursars office.  Payment may be made by cash, check, debit, or credit card, or present Agency voucher. Retests are $15.00 each.

TIME: The GED test is administered on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons in Room 130 of the Shake Learning Resources Center. You will take half the test on Wednesday, and then finish the second half on Thursday. ALL FIVE TESTS MUST BE COMPLETED WITHIN 35 DAYS. Examinees MUST call the Center if they are unable to meet a scheduled appointment so rescheduling can be arranged within this time limit. If the examinee does not advise the Center of the need to miss a scheduled appointment, their tests will be returned to our file to be made available to other examinees.

ON TEST DAYS YOU MAY NOT BRING ANY STUDY MATERIALS, CELL PHONES, PAGERS, NOTES, BOOKS, BACKPACKS, etc.,OR AIDS OF ANY KIND INTO THE TESTING ROOM UNLESS AUTHORIZED FOR USE DURING THE TEST.

Day 1 - TEST STARTS AT 11:30 a.m. SHARP!

Test 1 - Writing Skills with Essay - 120 minutes
Test 3 - Science - 70 minutes

Day 2 - TEST STARTS AT 11:30 a.m. SHARP!

Test 5 - Mathematics - part 1 with calculator, part 2 without calculator- 90 minutes
Test 2 - Social Studies - 70 minutes
Test 4 - Language Arts Reading - 65 minutes

IMPORTANT !! THE LANGUAGE ARTS-WRITING AND MATHEMATICS TESTS ARE GIVEN IN BLOCK TIME. EXAMINEES WILL BE STARTED AS A GROUP. YOU MUST BE ON TIME! IF YOU ARRIVE LATE YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO TEST AND MUST RESCHEDULE AT THE END OF THE LINE! MAKE YOUR TIME ARRANGEMENTS ACCORDINGLY.

NOTE: OUR OFFICE TELEPHONES ARE NOT AVAILABLE FOR YOU TO USE TO CALL YOUR RIDE !!! BRING CHANGE FOR THE PAYPHONE LOCATED IN THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING.

Passing Criteria

It takes a standard score of 410 to pass each individual test, (effective 10-01-96) ; however, it takes an average standard score of 450 to pass the GED and receive a certificate of completion. Thus a total of 2250 points is required to pass.

An applicant with a total standard score between 2150 and 2240 points may retest after 30 days. Applicants with a total standard score less than 2150 points must wait 90 days to retest. An applicant need only retake those subtests on which scores need to be raised. One or all five of the tests may be taken within the 35 day retesting period. If an applicant does not pass after the first retake, he or she must wait 180 days before retaking the tests again and on all subsequent retests. There is no limit to the number of times they can retest.

NO INFORMATION WILL BE GIVEN BY TELEPHONE ! YOU MAY CALL TO FIND OUT IF YOUR SCORES ARE IN FOR A TEST DATE OR COME IN WITH I.D. AND PICK UP YOUR RESULTS. TEST SCORE RESULTS MAY TAKE 6 TO 8 WEEKS TO PROCESS.
