Helen M. Sole was a professional genealogist and was much in demand in this field. She frequently
used the resources of the Lewis Historical Library; and, during her lifetime, presented her
genealogy files to the Lewis Library to be added to the historical collections there. Mrs. Sole
died on November 5, 1995; and, in her will, she bequeathed an endowment to the Lewis Library. This
endowment is in memory of Helen and John H. Sole.
Helen was born on January 28, 1911, in Carlisle, Indiana, the daughter of Louis J.
and Faye (Snapp) Kixmiller. She grew up in Oaktown and Carlisle and graduated from Carlisle High
School in 1928. In 1932 she graduated from Depauw University and did graduate work at Purdue
University. She worked in the Administration of Institutions at Purdue and at the University of
Chicago. Later, she developed a keen interest in genealogy and became a skilled researcher. She was
a member of the Northwest Territory Genealogical Society.
In March of 1944, she married John H. "Jack" Sole who died on April 27, 1978. After a long
career as an avid genealogist, she passed away and was laid to rest beside Jack at the Oddfellows
Cemetery in Carlisle, Indiana. Her extensive genealogy collection is now available to the public at
the Byron R. Lewis Historical Library located in the Shake Learning Resources Center at Vincennes
University in Vincennes Indiana. The Helen M. Sole collection consists of 36 boxes of research
material categorized by state, county, family, etc.
