Classes or families planning field trips to Vincennes have many options. Numerous memorials, historic sites, and parks grace the city, and Vincennes is home to some of the oldest homes in the Northwest Territory. These include The Old French Home and Grouseland, the mansion of President William Henry Harrison.
To reinforce the message of the field trip, try using activities from this site as introductions to the topic of Vincennes History and as follow-up activities.
In a review of research on field trips, Elsa Bailey (2006) suggests that children learn best from field trips when they know the schedule, meal times, and rules well in advance. Research reviewed by Bailey also suggest other means of improving learning during field trips: having clear learning goals, incorporating those goals into classroom work before and after the field trip, and avoiding worksheets and other formal activities during a field trip.
