OFFERED AT INDIANA SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF – INDIANAPOLIS
American Sign Language (ASL) is the third most frequently used language in the country, and yet Indiana has only a few dozen certified interpreters to serve a Deaf population in excess of 55,000.
To help alleviate this critical shortage of ASL professionals, Vincennes University and IUPUI have partnered to develop an intensive four-year program to train American Sign Language interpreters. It’s the only such
program in Indiana.
CRITICAL ELEMENTS OF LEARNING
ASL is taught at the Indiana School for the Deaf (ISD) in Indianapolis. Two critical elements comprise a truly innovative program that will make it easier for you to learn:
COMPLETING YOUR BACCALAUREATE DEGREE
After completing your first two years at VU (ISD), you will transfer to IUPUI to complete your baccalaureate degree. During your junior and senior years you will learn to communicate this new language by mastering the technical skills involved in interpretation.
Many classes are offered in the evenings to better accommodate students' schedules.
Note: Recommended courses assume any developmental requirements have been met.
