BIOTECHNOLOGY LAB ASSISTANT 4510

Lab assistants are “doers”—the individuals who perform the tasks directed by scientists. They are usually involved in testing and quality control and must be well trained in research techniques as well as the use of laboratory equipment and computers.

EMPLOYMENT POTENTIAL

One of the fastest growing industries in Indiana is pharmaceuticals, with the state pumping millions of dollars into biotechnology. Lab assistants who work with these pharmaceutical companies help develop and manufacture medicinal and pharmaceutical preparations. They use the knowledge and techniques gained from basic research by scientists, including gene splicing and recombinant DNA, and apply these techniques in product development.  The government also employs many lab assistants, mainly in the departments of Agriculture, Interior and Defense, and the National Institutes of Health.

THE VU ADVANTAGE

Vincennes University offers this program as an alternative for the student who enjoys the fascinating world of biotechnology and research, but prefers a practical approach as opposed to theory.  Class size is normally fewer than 35 students, which means easier access to laboratory equipment, as well as professors.  And, since VU has a teaching philosophy as opposed to research, you can be assured that qualified faculty—not teaching assistants will conduct your classes and labs

This program will prepare you for an entry-level job as a laboratory technician, or you may transfer to a four-year college to continue your studies.

Note:  Recommended courses assume any developmental requirements have been met.
