CHEMISTRY LAB ASSISTANT 4540

Lab assistants are “doers”—the individuals who perform the tests directed by the chemist. They are usually involved in testing or quality control and must be well trained in research techniques and the use of laboratory equipment and computers.

THE VU ADVANTAGE

Vincennes University offers this program to students who prefer a practical approach to chemistry as opposed to a theoretical one. Your education will include hands-on experiences with up-to-date scientific equipment and personal computers. Advantages to beginning your studies at VU include:

Small classes, usually fewer than 35, which means easier access to lab equipment as well as instructors.
A study skills laboratory.
Free tutoring.
Your lecture professor may be the one who leads your lab exercises. This not only encourages consistency in instruction, but gives you more opportunity to build a strong relationship with your professors.

LIFE AFTER VU

Most students enter the work force after two years of training, but some pursue a baccalaureate degree. Lab assistants may work for manufacturing firms—mainly in the chemical industry—but they are also employed by state and local governments and by federal agencies like the Department of Defense, Health and Human Resources, and Agriculture. Many students switch to careers in which a chemical background is important. These areas may include technical writing, sales, or chemical marketing.
