LASER AND ELECTRO-OPTICS 8368
Technology Division Visit Technology Print-Friendly Print-Friendly

Vincennes University's Laser and Electro-Optics program has been preparing students to meet the growing need for high skilled  technicians since 1977. VU is widely known in the industry for its high quality program and well-prepared graduates.

The program is designed to develop basic scientific knowledge and practical skills needed to operate, troubleshoot, install, and design various laser and optical equipment. You’ll take your laser classes in one of the premiere technology centers in the Midwest where you’ll gain valuable hands-on experience in modern, well-equipped labs.

WHERE YOU’LL WORK AND WHAT YOU’LL DO

Laser technicians work in manufacturing facilities in industrial and government research organizations, in hospitals, and as field service technicians. Specific tasks performed by laser technicians include:

  • Troubleshooting and repairing systems that involve lasers.
  • Make tests and measurements on electronic and optical devices.
  • Preparing alignment procedures on optical systems.
  • Preparing and reading shop drawings, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Supervising laser installations.
  • Implementing safety procedures.

PLACEMENT AND SALARIES

The employment outlook for laser technicians is expected to be excellent throughout the early part of the 21st century. Each year VU’s Laser/Electro-Optics graduating classes have several company interviews on campus, with many more companies requesting resumes.

The average starting salary for our graduates is in excess of $30,000/yr. with some graduates starting as high as $50,000/yr.

Note: Recommended courses are for the A.S. degree and assume any developmental requirements have been met.  A.A.S. degree also available.
