WHY VU?
Upon successful completion of this specialized program, students will be able to assess a person's needs and then implement the necessary care and training. This process will enable those with special needs the opportunity to maintain and/or gain appropriate independence, re-enter family life or the community setting, and possibly avoid institutionalization.
WHAT YOU WILL STUDY
Experiential training will be an integral part of this curriculum. Students will be trained in case management, behavioral intervention, information and referral, as well as professional ethics and consumer advocacy. In addition, general education courses will enhance oral and written communication skills. The courses required in this curriculum are either core or electives for social work or related fields, such as therapeutic recreation, occupational therapy, or elementary education.
Note: Recommended courses assume developmental requirements have been met.
