Lady Blazers Enjoy 39-Point Pasting of Rio Grande JV

The Vincennes Lady Trailblazers not only bounced back from a season-opening defeat by Danville Area College earlier in the week, but trounced the Rio Grande JV squad 83-44 Saturday during VU’s Blazerfest Homecoming.

Sophomore forward Hope Elam’s 20 points led a balanced VU scoring attack. Freshman Ashley Buis had 16, while Megan Craft scored 12 and Katie Ahaus chipped in with 11 for the Lady Trailblazers (1-1). Taylor Hunt contributed six points and Kendra Gay had four for VU.

VU got ahead early and never looked back, almost scoring enough points (41) by halftime for the victory. The Lady Trailblazers then outscored the Red Storm 42-24 in the second half to make it a no-doubter early on.

Elam’s 8-for-8 performance at the charity stripe highlighted the team’s 11-for-12 day from the line.

Candace Black's eight points led Rio Grande JV.

VU travels to No. 1-ranked Jefferson (Mo.)  College on Tuesday.

Lady Trailblazers to Visit Pre-Season No. 1 Jefferson

The VU Lady Trailblazers will visit NJCAA Pre-Season No. 1 Jefferson College Tuesday night.

The Lady Trailblazers (1-1) bounced back from a season-opening setback at home to Danville Area Community College with an 83-44 victory over Rio Grande JV Saturday during VU’s Blazerfest Homecoming.

Sophomore forward Hope Elam poured in 29 points in the season's first game and scored 20 to lead a balanced VU scoring attack against Rio Grande for a 24.5 scoring average through the first pair of games.

Jefferson enters the game untested so far in the early season. The Lady Vikings dismantled Pre-Season No. 15 Southwestern Illinois 89-46 and Wabash Valley 88-42 in the Nov. 1 and 2 Tip-Off Classic before routing South Suburban 92-28 and Pre-Season Honorable Mention Iowa Western 104-56 in the Lady Vikings' own Jeffco Classic.

Jefferson features Pre-Season First-Team All-American Danielle Adams and Pre-Season Second-Team All-America selection LaToya Johnson. The 6-foot-1 Adams averages 22.5 points and 10 rebounds through the first four games this year. She averaged 28 points and 14.1 rebounds last season.

Johnson has dished out five assists per game. Last season, she averaged 14 points and 5.5 assists per contest.

Both Adams and Johnson were also 2007-08 All-America picks as the Lady Vikings finished sixth in the national tournament.

Tuesday's game on the Lady Vikings' court will tip off at 7 p.m.
