Tennis Blazers grill Webber JV

By Dave Hunter (dhunter)

VU loses only five games in nine matches.....

Atlamonte Springs, Fla. – The Vincennes University tennis team kicked-off their spring break trip to the Orlando area Sunday morning with a dominating, 9-0, win over the Webber, Fla., International University JV team.

The Trailblazers (2-2) lost only five games in nine matches.

“It was good and bad,” said Vincennes coach Ron Albers. “It was nice to be outside and play in the elements. We needed the match the focus on things we’d worked on, taking the practice court to the match court in a low pressure situation to get more comfortable.”

Webber couldn’t play its top six players because they already had scheduled the maximum number of playing dates allowed by the NAIA.

Sophomores Jaime Esteban, David Jackson and Binky Nikou posted shut-out wins at one, two and three singles.

Freshman Jimmy Dunseith gave up one game at fourth singles, sophomore Andrew Bartlemo, two games at five and sophomore Chuck Hodge blanked his opponent at No. 6.

Jackson and Chris King won 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, Nikou and freshman Tony Kanavos, 8-1 at two and Esteban and Dunseith blanked their opponents at three.

Freshman No. 1 singles player Justin Harlow made the trip, but is sidelined for two weeks with a rotator cuff injury.

“It’s a full week down here and we needed to gear up for the next matches, two tomorrow and the rest of the week,” Albers said.

The Trailblazers play two NCAA Division II teams on Monday, Grand Valley State, Mich., and Wingate, N.C., which lost, 6-3, to Florida Tech on Sunday.
