Ron Albers records 598th career win…..
Altamonte Springs, Fla., Mar. 7 – The Vincennes University tennis team wrapped up an unbeaten spring break trip to Florida Friday afternoon, beating Michigan Tech, 9-0.
The victory was the 598th career win for Hall of Fame coach Ron Albers (598-144). The Blazers won six matches in as many days, the closest was 5-4 decision over Grand Valley State last Sunday.
“We wrapped up phenomenal week for us,” Albers said. “This was an invaluable learning experience for our team. Experience we gained playing six matches in six days is irreplaceable.”
Vincennes (7-2) lost only 11 games in six singles matches after dominating the doubles to start the day.
Albers knew Michigan Tech probably wasn’t the strongest team they’d face during the trip, but wanted his team to keep its focus in the final match.
That included nearly being sideswiped by another vehicle on the way to the courts and playing under a tornado watch from the start of the match.
Sophomore David Jackson kept his unbeaten record in eight singles matches in tact and is also undefeated in eight doubles matches with freshman Chris King.
“This team has a chance to be really special,” Albers said. “We’ve come a long way in a short period of time and could have let down today, but we maintained our high level of play.”
The Trailblazers begin a three-match trip to Morehead, Ky., Monday when they play West Virginia State. They’re slated to meet Morehead State and Georgetown, Ky., on Tuesday.
