Chris Taylor third in individual standings.....
Ina, Ill., Apr. 20-21 – The Vincennes University golf team tied Danville for fifth place in the 10-team Rend Lake Invitational Sunday and Monday.
The Trailblazers shot a team total 622 on the par 72, 6,861 yard Rend Lake Golf Course, only one stroke behind fourth place Illinois Central (621).
John A. Logan won the title with a 590 followed by Parkland, 598 and Rend Lake, 599.
“I was really pleased with our effort,” said VU coach Dennis Chattin. “We have continued to improve and the opening round 306 was our best score of the year. We’ve continued to drop our scores each tournament and I’m really pleased with our players.”
VU sophomore Chris Taylor was third in the individual standings with a 36-hole 147 (70-77).
“Chris had a great tournament,” Chattin said. “Finishing third with a nationally-ranked team like Logan in the field is great.”
Taylor’s opening round 70 was his first under par round of the spring and included four birdies and an eagle.
“He has shown steady improvement this spring and has had three solid performances the last three times out. When he came to VU last year, he was really wild with his driver and today, he hit 14 fairways..”
Jason Walters shot a 158 (79-79), Andrew Grantz, 161 (85-76), Josh Robbins, 162 (78-84) and Logan Lamb, 165 (79-86).
“Grantz had his best round with a 76,” Chattin said. “He has really been working hard on his game and it paid off today.”
Chattin predicts VU’s strong spring schedule will pay off in the region tournament, May 10-11 at Weatherwax Golf Club in Middletown, Ohio.
“We hope we’re starting to peak for the region tournament,” he said.
