Albers gets 599 in 9-0 sweep

By Dave Hunter (dhunter)

Blazers face NCAA D-1 Morehead State on Tuesday.....

Morehead, Ky., Mar. 10 – Vincennes University tennis coach Ron Albers is just one win away from 600 career victories after a 9-0 sweep of West Virginia State Monday afternoon at Morehead, Ky.

The Trailblazers (8-2) extended their win streak to seven matches against the Yellow Jackets who won only 17 games in six singles matches.

            Albers record is 599-144 (.806).

“We worked on a few of our shortcomings,” he said. “There was a letdown in the level of intensity coming off six matches in Orlando last week, then traveling 4 ½ hours to play on three indoor courts here.”

The top trio of sophomores Jaime Esteban, David Jackson and Binky Nikou dominated their matches while Albers used the bottom of the lineup to get varsity experience for freshman Jimmy Dunseith and sophomores Andrew Bartelmo and Chuck Hodge.

“They got another chance contribute in the lineup and made good on their opportunity,” Albers said. “It’s experience that will bode well down the road.”

Dunseith defeated Jonathan Godbey, 6-0, 6-0, Bartelmo beat Joe Toler, 6-0, 6-2 and Hodge blanked Andy Hatfield, 6-0, 6-0.

Freshman Tony Kanavos played at No. 2 doubles with Nikou and beat Scott Farmer and Godbey, 8-2.

The Trailblazers face two challenges on Tuesday, playing host NCAA Division I Morehead State at 10 a.m. and Georgetown, Ky., College at 3.

“We really need to be ready and step up tomorrow morning,” Albers said. “It will be a major test against one of the best challenges of the year. We need to bring everything we’ve got tomorrow.”
