VU travels to IUPUI Tuesday.....

Vincennes, Ind., Mar. 22 – The Vincennes University tennis team played its first home match of the season Saturday morning, defeating IU-Southeast, 6-1, in 40 degree weather and a wind-chill below freezing.

“We were very flat going into the match,” said Vincennes coach Ron Albers. “It wasn’t one of our best efforts of the year.”

The teams played the singles matches first with the Blazers (12-2) winning five of the six flights.

Freshman Chris King sealed the outcome of the match with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Adam Denney at third singles.

Freshman McKenzie Bean and sophomores Jaime Esteban and Binky Nikou were the first matches off the court in that order and gave up only five games.

“We had good play from Bean, Nikou, and Jaime in singles,” Albers said. “The conditions were tough for both sides. We won on talent.”

Albers was also impressed with sophomore Andrew Bartelmo who gained a split-set, tie-break win, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0(5), over Steve Gogel at fifth singles.

“He played well in the first set, suffered a letdown in the second,” Albers said. “He came back and played very well in the tie break.”

Sophomore David Jackson and King (13-1) suffered their first doubles loss of the season, 8-4, to Jordan Hamilton and Joseph Boesing.

            Albers wasn’t pleased.

“When you’re not ready to compete, that will happen. That’s the result you’ll get against anybody who’s good.”

Saturday’s afternoon match against Western Illinois was cancelled due to weather conditions.

The Trailblazers have won 11 straight matches and play IUPUI in Indianapolis at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
