Sophomore Nikou's singles win clinches outcome of the match.....
Indianapolis, Ind., Mar. 21 – The Vincennes University tennis stretched its winning streak to ten matches Friday afternoon, defeating the University of Indianapolis, 7-2.
“To beat them at their place, indoors, is really a good win,” said VU coach Ron Albers. “There’s not a lot of places I consider to be a home court advantage, but that’s one.”
The Trailblazers (11-2) set the tone of the match early by sweeping the doubles.
Sophomore David Jackson and freshman Chris King defeated Jan Stastny and J.D. Greenlee, 8-3, at No. 1, Binky Nikou and Tony Kanavos got by Mark dos Prazeres-Silva and Kyle Prow, 9-7, at second doubles while Jaime Esteban and Chuck Hodge blanked Werner Henning and Blake Hall, 8-0, at three.
“We were exceptionally good at one and three,” Albers said. “Jaime and Chuck were flawless, everything you need to do to be successful, from service returns to the plays we run.”
Freshman Tony Kanavos and Nikou were first off the court in singles, winning both matches to give VU 5-0 lead and sealing the outcome of the team match.
Kanavos bageled Hall, 6-0, 6-0 and Nikou gave up only two games in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Henning.
Albers was especially pleased with Jackson and Esteban in singles even though they split, Jackson beating Stastny, 6-1, 7-6(2) and Esteban losing to Greenlee, 7-6(11), 2-6, 1-0(5)
“Stastny and Greenlee are both upper-classmen,” Albers said. “Jackson beat a very good player and Esteban’s match could have gone the other way.”
The Trailblazers are scheduled to play their first home matches of the season Saturday, hosting IU-Southeast at 10 a.m. and Western Illinois at four.
