Tennis Blazers topple Mighty Oaks, 9-0

By Dave Hunter (dhunter)

VU loses only 14 games in nine matches.....

Vincennes, Ind., Apr. 8 – The Vincennes University tennis team spared no “trees” Tuesday afternoon in a 9-0 win over the visiting Oakland City Mighty Oaks.

Vincennes (23-3) lost only nine games in six singles matches and dropped only five games in three doubles pro-sets.

“The match gave us a chance to work on some things,” VU coach Ron Albers said. “We were very passive at Lewis & Clark, not really attacking and taking advantage of opportunities during points. We practiced prior to the match this morning and worked on being more aggressive.”

Due to the threat of rain, the teams played the singles matches first.

Sophomore Jaime Esteban posted a 6-1, 6-1, win over Danko Aguirre at No. 1 singles, giving the Blazers an insurmountable 5-0 lead in the team match. Esteban improved his season record to 15-6.

A notable returnee in the Blazer lineup was freshman Justin Harlow (2-1) who hadn’t played since Feb. 3 due to a shoulder injury.

Albers put Harlow at fourth singles where he defeated Heiko Juergens, 6-1, 6-3.

“I needed to get him back in the lineup,” he said. “He’s healthy enough now and there are some layers of rust on his game, but he was anxious to get back in the lineup.”

“Overall, I was pleased with his attitude and willing to work through nine weeks of rehab. Hopefully, it was the start of him playing the rest of the season.”

The Trailblazers play at Southern Indiana Wednesday afternoon in a match scheduled to start at 2 p.m., Evansville time.
