David W. Hunter
Voice of Trailblazer Basketball
on WVUB Radio
Hunter joined the Vincennes University staff in August of 1995. During his broadcasting career, he worked in sports, management and sales. Since the 1982-83 basketball season, he has been the voice of Trailblazer basketball. Starting in 1972, Hunter has broadcast more than 2,000 local high school football, basketball and baseball games.
He assumed the duties of V.U. Sports Information Director in March of 2001 before retiring in September of 2008.
He is a 1961 graduate of Bicknell High School. From 1965 to 1968, He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps as part of the White House Communications Agency staff in Washington, D.C. He began his broadcasting career in Carmi, Illinois, in October 1971 before joining Vincennes radio station WAOV in January of 1972.
He was honored with the Indiana Associated Press "Best Local Play-by-Play Award" for his call of the November 20, 2001, V.U. at Wabash Valley basketball game. He received the prestigious Indiana High School Athletic Association Media Award in 1993 and the Western Tennis Association's Media Service Award in 1994.
He is a certified U.S.T.A. and I.T.A. tennis official who works matches in the Big Ten and Missouri Valley Conferences. He also works the USTA Boys 16-18 Nationals in Kalamazoo, Mich., the I.T.A. Summer National Championships in Bloomington, Ind., and coordinates Vincennes University summer tournament events.
Dave and his wife, Kay, have two daughters, Shannan Turpin and Heather Whaley, who are both graduates of Vincennes University, two grandsons, Samuel and Brett Turpin, and granddaughter, Emma Kay Whaley.
