Browsers, Plugins and Viewers

Browsers

If you are using an older version of a browser that cannot handle advanced features of HTML, then some portions of this course may not work for you. We recommend you use the newest version.

Internet Explorer

Netscape Navigator

Mozilla Firefox

Plugins and Players

Browsers also use plug-ins and other programs to help display Web documents. If you encounter an element (such as video or animation) that requires one of these plugins or players, you may see a message that your browser is not equipped for that content type. The following are common plug-ins, players, and viewers that are used on the Web in general, and that may also be necessary for parts of the course.

Adobe - View and print millions of documents on the Web with the free Adobe? Acrobat? Reader.

Java - is a free software program that allows you to run applications called "applets" written in the Java programming language. These applets allow you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, and view images in 3D. Corporations also use applets for intranet applications and e-business solutions.  You may need Java to take some tests online in Blackboard.

QuickTime - "The free QuickTime Player is an application for playing, interacting with, or viewing any video, audio, VR, or graphics file that is compatible with QuickTime. This includes MPEG-4, the new standard for digital media, new in QuickTime 6." (Apple Web site)

Macromedia's Shockwave, Flash and Authorware Player - plug-ins let you experience automation and entertainment in your Web browser. The new Shockwave 7 provides auto-updating of the player.

Windows Media Player - supports Windows Media (WMA,ASF), MP3, WAV, MIDI, AVI, and other formats.

Real Player -  online audio and video content.

Viewers

Microsoft Office is the college standard software here at Vincennes University and may be required to view and transfer files to and from your instructor. If you do not have Microsoft Office  installed on your computer, you will need to download one, or more, of the following viewers. Be aware these are viewers and will not allow you to save or edit documents. You may need to purchase Microsoft Office Suite in order to sucessfully complete your course

This viewer also supports opening password-protected Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. You can view and print presentations, but you cannot edit them in the PowerPoint Viewer 2003.

Excel Viewer-   With Excel Viewer 2003, you can open, view, and print Excel workbooks, even if you don't have Excel installed. You can also copy data from Excel Viewer 2003 to another program. However, you cannot edit data, save a workbook, or create a new workbook

Word Viewer - Word Viewer 2003 lets you open Word 2003 documents and documents created with all previous versions of Microsoft Word for Windows? and Microsoft Word for Macintosh. In addition to Word document files (.doc), you can also open files saved in the following formats:
