Machine Trades is a skilled occupation in which raw material is transformed into a special machine or tool. The Injection Mold Tooling Option will train students to build injection molds that produce many plastic components and products used by today’s consumer.
Vincennes University offers the only Machine Trades Technology program in Indiana, and it is one of the very few in the United States to offer specialized training in building metal stamping dies and injection molds for plastics.
What You Will Study
Students have the opportunity to develop a solid background in machine shop practices, and to learn set-up and operations for all basic types of machine tools including computer-controlled machines. Classroom discussions focus on theory, terminology, and calculations. Students also produce a series of three injection molds that introduce the construction of:
- Cores
- Side-action systems
- Ejectors
- Inserts
- Simple and multiple cavities
- Parting lines
- Mold bases
- Polishing techniques
Some students elect to participate in a summer credit Industrial Cooperative Work Experience program that may open the door for employment upon graduation.
The type and quality of equipment used in our labs include traditional machine tools as well as the latest in computer machining equipment— identical to that found in industry. In addition, faculty have extensive background in education, teaching, and the work force to ensure that you receive instruction in both theory and practical applications.
PLACEMENT AND SALARIES
Starting salaries for our Injection Mold Tooling graduates average in the mid-twenty to mid-thirty thousand dollar range with some far exceeding this range. Placement opportunities are excellent with over 90 percent becoming employed in the industry. Approximately 5 percent of all Injection Mold Tooling graduates transfer to four-year schools to pursue advanced degrees.
