International Students - Healthcare

It is important to know that the United States does not provide socialized medicine. Because medical care can be very expensive, it is important to have health insurance, even if the school does not require it.

Vincennes University has a health center that is staffed with three registered nurses. The RN's provide over-the-counter medication, initial and follow-up care of injuries, tetanus injections following an injury, and tuberculin screening. For more serious conditions, you will be referred to a doctor.

If you are living in a residence hall, you will automatically be on the University Health Plan, which means you will only have to pay the doctor $5.00 for each visit. If you decide to live off-campus, you may be added to the plan for $21.00. Please note, however, that this policy does not cover hospitalization or dental expenses, both of which are expensive in the United States. It is very important that you purchase additional medical insurance either in your country or immediately upon your arrival in Vincennes. If you need assistance, our Health Department will help you find an agency.

After you have been admitted to Vincennes University, you will receive a University health form and immunization form in the mail. These forms must be completed and submitted to the Health Office prior to the beginning of the semester. In case there are any questions, it's a good idea for you to bring a copy of your medical records with you to the US, including immunization and vaccination records and prescriptions.
