Vincennes University Police Issue Statement About Student Cause of Death

VINCENNES, Ind. — A medical condition is a possible cause of a student's death according to a preliminary report by Vincennes University Police.

 Vincennes University identified the student as Andrew Michael Coburn, 20, from Connersville, who was found unresponsive by another student at 2:56 p.m. on Jan. 21 in a residence hall room. Coburn was a freshman majoring in Culinary Arts. VU President Dick Helton notified the student’s mother. President Helton issued this statement: “On behalf of the Vincennes University community, I express my deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Andrew Coburn.”

VU Police, Indiana State Police, and the Knox County Coroner are investigating.

VU student identified who died in residence hall

VINCENNES, Ind. — Vincennes University officials have identified the male student who passed away in Godare Residence Hall.

VU Jasper to offer 2 computer training programs

January 20, 2012

JASPER, Ind. - The Vincennes University Jasper Campus will offer two
specialized computer training programs for persons seeking to achieve
industry-recognized certifications.

The CompTIA A+ Certification program provides comprehensive training for
students who already have some existing knowledge of, and support
experience with, networked desktop and notebook computers running Windows
2000 Professional or any Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 operating
system.  Topics covered include troubleshooting methodology, operating
systems, electricity and power supplies, CPUs and mother boards, the basic
input/output system, memory systems, bus structures, expansion cards,
peripheral connection types, data storage devices video output and image
input devices.

This five-day course will be held March 19-23 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
(EST) each day.  The course fee is $2,995 and includes materials and daily
lunch.  The registration deadline is March 8.

Training will prepare students at an accelerated pace for the two exams
that make up the A+ certification 2009 Edition:  CompTIA A+ Essentials and
CompTIA A+ Practical Application.  Students will gain the skills and
knowledge necessary to perform the following tasks on personal computer
hardware and operating systems:  installation, PC building, system
upgrades, repair, system configuration, troubleshooting, problem diagnosis,
and preventative maintenance.  The course manual comes with exam prep
software.

Cisco Certified Network Associate is also a five-day course that will be
offered March 26-30 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. each day.  CCNA
certification is one of the most sought-after certifications in the
computer networking field.  Individuals who are seeking certification as a
starting point for an IT career will find that this course provides them
with the foundational skills in wireless networking and security to meet
the CCNA exam requirements.

Participants who successfully complete this course will learn how to
install, configure, operate, secure, and troubleshoot medium-sized routed
and switched networks using Cisco techniques.  The course fee is $2,495 and
includes materials and daily lunch.  The registration deadline is March 15.

Police investigate Monday rape report

January 19, 2012

VINCENNES, Ind. - An investigation is underway concerning a report of a rape Monday evening in the 600 block of North First Street in Vincennes.

According to a report from the Vincennes University Police Department, a young female says she was walking along the street when she was grabbed, placed in a parked vehicle, and raped.

VU Police said the investigation into the alleged rape continues.

Employers invited to luncheon about employee training

February 10, 2012

FORT BRANCH, Ind. - Area employers are invited to a free Lunch ‘n Learn event on Feb. 17, 11:30 a.m. CST, at the Gibson County Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics located on U.S. 41 in Ft. Branch.

The focus of the discussion will be how area employers can benefit from training and educational opportunities that are specifically designed to meet workforce demands of local businesses.  Vincennes University personnel will describe the training available that ranges from a basic material handling course to an associate degree in Supply Chain Logistics Management.  These training programs will provide students and employees with skill sets for obtaining entry-level, supervisory, and mid-level management supply chain positions.

VU Jasper Beta Sigma to sponsor Chili Cook-Off

January 19, 2012

JASPER, Ind. - The Vincennes University Jasper Campus Beta Sigma Club will sponsor a Chili Cook-Off fundraiser on Feb. 9, 4:30 p.m. CST, at the Bistro in the Ruxer Student Center.  Gift cards and trophies will be awarded for first place, second place, and people’s choice.

This is an open competition and all types of chili are welcome.  The chili will be served from the contestant’s own electric crock-pot and not prepared on site.  The Chili Cook-Off will be open for any person or group who wishes to compete.  The entry fee is $10 with $5 being waived for VUJC students.  Proceeds go towards Beta Sigma’s support of local charities.

Participants must pre-register by Jan. 26.  Entry forms may be picked up from the VUJC Continuing Education Office on the first level of the Administration Building, or downloaded from www.vinu.edu/jasper under the Student Activities tab.  Space is limited and entries will be processed on first come/first serve basis.

VU Jasper to host Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society fundraiser

January 19, 2012

JASPER, Ind. - The Vincennes University Jasper Campus Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society will sponsor a silent auction fundraiser on Jan. 25, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. CST, at the Ruxer Student Center Gymnasium.

Auction items include new purses, tools, chairs, flashlights, salon products, coolers, chocolates, and manicures.  There will also be gift cards and gift certificates to local stores and restaurants, including CVS, Wilson’s Flowers, Ivy Manor, Green Thumb, Krempp Lumber, Finishing Touches, IGA, Illusions, Cutz Salon, McDonalds, Papa Johns, Pizza Hut, Villa Pizzeria, and China’s Best.

Participants pay $1 to register and can bid on any item as many times as needed to win that item.  Proceeds support the activities of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at VUJC.
