C. James McCormick (Vincennes University Trustee) describes the parents of his late wife
Bettye as " just good, solid folks." Although Virgil was a successful industrialist and pioneer in
the wood products industry, many people from all walks of life knew him better as a good friend.
Both Virgil (1891- 1979) and Catherine (1893 - 1951) exemplified citizenship and family
values, with Catherine dedicating her life to her husband and four children. McCormick remembers
them as caring individuals who rooted for the underdog and quietly helped people in need.
Because of their desire to help others succeed, it is only fitting that this local couple be
memorialized at the entrance to the Vincennes University Jasper Campus, the community's only
institution of higher learning. For gene rations to come, the Virgil and Catherine Gramelspacher
Gate will welcome anyone seeking a better life, reflecting Vincennes University Jasper Campus's
open access philosophy and commitment to community service.
