The Advanced Manufacturing & Technology Center to be constructed on the VU Jasper Campus will house programming to serve the education and training needs of employers and individuals in Dubois and surrounding counties.
The facility will provide:

  • Advanced training for manufacturing employers that need their workers to apply new technologies.
  • Specialty programming for incumbent workers who wish to upgrade their skills to advance their careers.
  • Specialized continuing education programming for high skilled engineers and scientists in regional manufacturing companies.
  • Space for companies to pilot new processes and train employees in their application. • Career and technical classes in certificate and associate degree programs for students preparing to enter
    the workforce.
  • Programming for high school students enrolled for dual-credit in career and technical education classes.
  • Programming for high school students in Project Lead-the-Way technology programs. • Increased capacity to serve high school teachers and students in science, technology, engineering and
    mathematics (STEM) courses.
  • Office, auditorium, and meeting space for workforce development and economic development organizations to conduct business, hold meetings and conferences, and sponsor workshops and classes in collaboration with VUJC.

Manufacturing Education at VU
Vincennes University offers comprehensive manufacturing education at its Vincennes Campus. The proposed facility on the Jasper Campus will allow VU to better serve manufacturers in Dubois and the wider region with programming that may include:

  • Drafting & Design/CAD
  • Computer-Integrated Manufacturing
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Machine Trades
  • Tool & Die
  • Welding
  • Industrial Maintenance

    Need for Skilled Technicians in:
    (CIM)/Robotics
    Electronics
    Computer Networking
    Supply Chain Logistics Management
    Business Support and Leadership
  • In Indiana, 20% of the jobs are in manufacturing compared to 42% in Dubois County.
  • In 2007, the Southwest Indiana WIRED Implementation Plan identified as high growth areas the business clusters of Advanced Manufacturing, Biomedical & Biotechnology, Chemicals & Plastics, Energy, and Transportation, Distribution & Logistics.
  • According to Nathan Feltman, CEO. of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, “Economic developers see having the right number of workers with the right skills available as the most critical factor in expanding existing businesses and attracting new businesses.”
  • Studies by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), the Manufacturing Institute, and Deloitte Consulting LLP indicated that more than 80% of U.S. manufacturers surveyed are experiencing overall shortages - most importantly 90% in the areas of machinists, operators, and technicians.
  • The NAM study also found that in 1973, more than half of the workers on factory floors had not finished high school, but by 2001 nearly a third of production workers had some form of post- secondary education (up from just 8% in 1973). It is estimated that approximately 65% of future jobs will require an associate degree.
  • A January 2007 article titled “Automation Outlook 2007” in InTech Magazine says that demand for automation talent grows and is increasingly met offshore; we must keep talent in Indiana.
  • The Economist estimated that 50% of America’s senior technical personnel in manufacturing will retire in the next five years. We must prepare our high school students and retrain those employees who have lost their jobs to keep Indiana globally competitive.
