Exciting things are taking place in the Business, Technology and Law Enforcement Department on the
Jasper Campus. Beginning in the Fall semester of 2007 Business and Technology students on the
Jasper Campus may have the opportunity to enroll in classes that can eventually lead them to a B.S.
(Bachelor of Science) Degree from Vincennes University. “ Students enrolled in several fields
of study such as Computer Programming, Networking, and Web studies, can use the classes required
for the Associate Degree and apply them to this degree”, says Department Chair Sheila
Collett. She has been working closely with representatives of the Technology Division on the
Vincennes campus to get these classes available here at the Jasper Campus. The Bachelor of
Science in Technology degree offered by Vincennes University is fully accredited by the North
Central Association and can be used to enter into a master’s program at any accredited institution
of higher education.
Students will study advanced technologies, research, and project applications specific to his
or her technical specialty. With emphasis in quality management, business management,
industry process, supervisory team work, ethics, and professional relationships, the program
provides graduates with the skills required to attain management positions in today’s hi-tech
business community. Students may additionally have the opportunity to earn a Certificate of
Program Completion in Total Quality Management.
The Bachelor of Science in Technology program will be available through a combination of
distance education courses, project development, and on campus classes – making this program
perfect for the working professional seeking career advancement.
In other areas in the Business, Technology and Law Enforcement Department exciting things are
taking place as well. Enrollment in the Computer Programming Technology – Networking Option
(5451) program is at an all time high. “ We are busting at the seams”, says Bob Reeves an
Instructor in this area, “ All the seats are full. This is the fourth group to go through the
Networking cycle and the largest one to date.” The popularity of this program can be
attributed to the need for qualified individuals to fill positions in industry to support their
networks and computer applications. “ The right person with this degree and the Microsoft and
A+ Certifications can go anyplace and feel secure employment in many sectors of Industry.”
VUJC currently runs these programs on a two year cycle which begins with students enrolling in COMP
130 – Communications and Networking. The cycle continues the following three semester with
CPNS 170 Computer Networking I, CPNS Computer Networking II, and finishes with CPNS 280 Computer
Networking III. “Emphasis is placed on the Windows Networking Operating System, its
installation and daily management” says Reeves. “ To receive Microsoft Certification the
student must sit for a series of Exams, which these courses are intended to prepare them to take.”
Another area of significant growth is in the Web Design and Computer Graphics area.
With the purchase of state-of-the-art computer graphics software from Adobe and Macromedia, VUJC is
able to offer courses in Web Design, Photo Editing, and Vector Graphics. All these resources
are used to create attractive and very useful Web sites and pages. “ We have not been able to
offer these classes on campus before because of the lack of the proper software”, says Reeves who
also teaches in this area. “ We can and will offer exciting and fun classes in computer graphics
each semester. This semester we are offering an Adobe Illustrator class for the first
time. The student enrolled in this class love it.” Not surprising to Reeves is the
enrollment of students in this class that are not Web Design students. “ There are a couple
in there who are very good artist, and are taking the class to enhance their artistic
creativity. It is exciting for me to watch them work. But it is fun to watch all our
students learn and succeed” In the Fall of 2007 a course called CWEB 151 – Introduction to
Web Graphics and Tools, will be offered for the first time on this campus. This course will
cover the basic operations of Adobe Photoshop which is a powerful photo editing software
program. In addition, COMP 107 Web Page Design and CWEB 213 Web Based Electronic Commerce
will be offered on campus.
Great things are happening at Vincennes University Jasper Campus and in the Business,
Technology, and Law Enforcement Department. Great things will continue to happen under the
new leadership on campus and the department. Keep these courses in mind when meeting with
your advisor to set up classes.
