The Counseling Center staff has a strong commitment to maintaining the
confidentiality of the information shared by clients. The Center complies with both state and
federal laws regarding confidentiality as well as the ethical standards set forth by the American
Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association. Information discussed in
counseling sessions customarily remains confidential unless the client indicates in writing that he
or she wishes the information to be communicated to a specific person outside the Center.
The law does require certain exceptions to confidentiality. For instance,
counselors are required to report suspected abuse of those not competent to protect themselves and
to make appropriate notifications when there is imminent risk to physical health or safety. No
record of counseling is made in academic transcripts. A confidential file separate from the
academic record is established and maintained within the Counseling Center, and no information is
released to anyone, including faculty, administration, or parents, without written consent.
The staff of the Counseling Center is committed to the highest standards of ethical
practice. Counselors strive to provide a counseling experience that assists clients in the
development of their potential in an atmosphere that recognizes diversity and freedom of individual
choice.
