VINCENNES, Ind. -- The Vincennes University Men’s Cross Country team travels to Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. Saturday morning for its third meet of the season.

First-year Trailblazers coach Randy Heisler, who has coached in the Division I ranks for 30 years prior to VU, is hoping his young team can be more competitive.

“We have not experienced a lot of success during our first two meets of the year, but for good reason,” the coach explained. “School started in the middle of August and we have a meet two weeks simply do not get ready for a cross country season in two weeks. And in both of our meets, we were running against predominantly Division I programs.”

Although VU will still be competing against some DI programs and athletes on Saturday, Heisler noted the team will also be competing against a lot of programs closer to their talent level.

Heisler is also hoping his young team will show it has learned from the first two meets of the season.

“The collegiate level you are running five miles (8K) compared to three miles (5K) in high school,” Heisler said. “In those first two meets, you saw our kids competing for the first four miles and then just trying to hold on and finish during the last mile. There’s a big difference in racing that last mile instead of just seeing the finish line and trying to get there. You want your guys to be able to compete and have that moment where they can pass people in those last few meters. If five or six of your guys can do that, it changes your team result drastically. We hope to be able to do that this weekend.”

Seth Vaquero, Atlantis Green and Jacob Adams are all returnees from last year’s team and are joined by Bryann Manuel, Morne Scharnick and Milan Todorovic.

All except Todorovic -- who is recovering from a hip injury -- are expected to compete in Louisville.

“I have been pleased with all of their efforts,” Heisler said. “They are all still adjusting but they are putting in between 65-85 miles per week. It is my hope they can just go out run healthy and be competitive on Saturday.”

Elizabeth Bredeweg competes on the women’s team but will not be running on Saturday. The sophomore has battled injuries throughout the season and is still training to get back into race shape.

“What a great young lady Liz is,” Heisler said. “She has gone through some medical issues but we are hoping to get her up to speed for our next meet in Evansville (Oct. 13). She is getting close and we just want her to have a good experience and be ready for the regional meet.”

Although a couple other runners are training on the women’s team, Bredeweg will be the only competitor for VU the rest of the season.

The VU men will compete at 12 p.m. on Saturday.
