#21 Vincennes University Gets Back to Winnings Ways in Defensive Battle with Southeastern Illinois

Vincennes, IN – The #21-ranked Lady Trailblazers looked to get rid of their 2-game losing streak on sophomore night against the Lady Falcons of Southeastern Illinois College.

Open shots were tough to come by in this District P match-up and it was apparent on the scoreboard and in the stats sheet. Together the VU and SEIC shot 26% from the field in the first-half, and Vincennes held a slim 24 – 23 lead at halftime. The Lady Trailblazers got ahead by as much as 11 in the first 2 periods of play, but every time it looked like Vincennes had control of the game, Southeastern Illinois would battle back and close the gap.

VU tried to put the Lady Falcons away early in the third quarter, but Southeastern Illinois proved that they would not be pushed around, battling back-and-forth with the Lady Trailblazers all through the 10-minute period. VU only managed to add 1 more point to their lead going into the final period ahead 36 -34. Finally, in the fourth quarter the Lady Trailblazers got some of their shots to go in and keep the defensive pressure on Southeastern Illinois as the lead continued to grow. Once the final buzzer sounded Vincennes was ahead once again snapping a 2-game losing streak. The Lady Trailblazers doubled Southeastern in the fourth quarter to go on to win 52 – 42.

Sophomore Claudia Stan had yet another double-double with 14 points and 16 rebounds, including 12 possession ending defensive rebounds. Stan also added 4 blocks to her stat line. Fellow sophomore Mykel Roth finished her night with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Roth hit all 6 of her free throw attempts during the game, which were a key factor in the Lady Trailblazers building and sustaining their lead late. Sophomore Ashley Johnson got the start on sophomore night and did not disappoint with 7 points and 6 rebounds, Johnson also lead the Lady Trailblazers with 3 assists.

Vincennes will remain at home for their final regular season home game against State Fair College. This game will be on Monday February 19th, with a special President’s Day start time of 4 p.m. eastern.
