At VU, we believe sports play an important role in the overall purpose of an educational institution. We support a well-rounded intercollegiate sports program for both men and women and have a strong presence in the NJCAA where we can claim several national championships. But we are equally proud of our individual All-American and All-American Academic athletes who have used their talent to continue their education at four-year colleges.

#23 Vincennes University Uses Second-Half Shooting Surge to Defeat Mineral Area

Vincennes, IN-The #23 Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers came into tonight’s game on a mission, and with the 98-62 victory over Mineral Area, I would say the mission was a success.

The first-half of the game was a defensive battle fought in the backcourt. Mineral Area and Vincennes combined for 20 turnovers, many resulting in fast-break opportunities on the offensive end. Sophomore Ladellia Maggett lead the Lady Blazers at the break with 10 points, along with fellow Chicago native Marquitta Easley who went into half with 9 points. Mykel Roth was VU’s leading rebounder at the break, with 5 rebounds to go with her 8 points.

In the second-half the Lady Trailblazers were shooting lights out from 3-point land, on second thought, maybe lights out doesn’t quite describe the shooting clinic VU put on. Maybe it’s best to just say, the Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers shot 9 3-pointers in the second-half, and did not miss! VU was 9 for 9 from 3 in the final 2 quarters of play, on their way to an astonishing 85% 3-point shooting percentage on the night. Sophomore Ashley Johnson was 3 of 3, freshman Oksana Fastova was also 3 of 3. Ladellia Maggett connected on 2, and freshman Ivanda Hudjakova was 1 for 1.

Vincennes had 5 players finish in double-figures in points, Ladellia Maggett had a team-high 20, Mykel Roth had 18, Ashley Johnson used her 4 of 4 made 3-pointers to end the game with 16, Marquitta Easley had 13, and Oksana Fastova had 11 points.

The Lady Trailblazers hit the road after tonight’s game, heading to Sedalia, MO to take on State Fair Community College on Wednesday, December 6th. VU’s next home game will be this weekend on Saturday, December 9th as they face-off against District P rival Olney Central as part of a men’s and women’s double-header. The women’s game will tip-off at 5 p.m. eastern.
