#24 Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers Advance to District P Semi-Finals

Vincennes, IN – The #24-ranked Vincennes University Trailblazers defeated the Blue Storm of Southwestern Illinois by the score of 92 – 54, to advance to the Semi-Final round of the Women’s District P Basketball Tournament.

Vincennes set the tone of the game early, jumping out to a 15 – 0 lead early. The Lady Trailblazers defense has proved to be troublesome for many teams throughout the season, and tonight forced the Blue Storm into 16 first half turnovers on 10 steals. Sophomore Ladellia Maggett led the VU offensive, fast-break attack with 13 points in the first two quarters of play, with a pair of spectacular assists to fellow sophomore Mykel Roth toward the end of the second quarter. The Vincennes lead reached 28 points at halftime, going into the locker room with a 49 – 21 advantage.

Mykel Roth continued to be the focus of the Lady Trailblazers offensive attack out of the locker room, who added 15 points in the final two quarters alone. Roth was found easy layup opportunities as a result of precision passing from Ladellia Maggett and freshman Christina De La Cruz. The Lady Trailblazers defense continued to pose problems for the Blue Storm in the second-half, only allowing 10 made field goals in the final 20 minutes of play. Southwestern Illinois only made 30% of their field goal attempts for the entire game, which means scoring chances were tough to come by on this night.

Mykel Roth was the games leading scorer with 22 points, also adding 8 rebounds to her total. Ladellia Maggett followed her with 16 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. Freshman Janiya Davis rounded out the Lady Trailblazers in double figures with 13 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Sophomore Ashley Johnson made her presence felt on both ends of the floor connecting on a 3 of her 3 points attempts for 9 points on the night and swiping 6 steals on the defensive end. Fellow freshman Marquitta Easley also put together an all-around game with 8 points and 5 steals.

The Lady Trailblazers advanced to the Semi-Final Round of the District P postseason tournament, when they take on the Lady Volunteers of John A. Logan College in Ina, IL on Thursday, March 8th. Tip-off of this game is scheduled for 4 p.m. eastern, 3 p.m. central.
