At VU, we believe sports play an important role in the overall purpose of an educational institution. We support a well-rounded intercollegiate sports program for both men and women and have a strong presence in the NJCAA where we can claim several national championships. But we are equally proud of our individual All-American and All-American Academic athletes who have used their talent to continue their education at four-year colleges.

VU Women’s Basketball claims first two wins of season

Dodd scores 37, Cooper grabs 20 boards in 2 games

Sophomore Nichole Dodd scored 19 points and freshmen Jeanier Olukemi and Chelsea Bentley both had 11 as the Vincennes University Women's Basketball Team topped Cincinnati State Saturday afternoon by a 74-61 score.

VU (2-0) also got 10 rebounds for the second straight game from freshman Jesheon Cooper. Olukemi registered five assists and five steals.

"The game was very, very physical with a lot of fouls called. As the game progressed, we got down by eight points and I thought we had gotten run out of our offense," VU Coach Harry Meeks said. "But, we were up at halftime and got back in the offense that we knew.

"Nicole Dodd shot the ball very well again," he continued. "Jeanier (Olukemi) did an outstanding job and helped settle down our team when we got out of order. Chelsea (Bentley) had an outstanding 2nd half; she took excellent shots. (Freshman) Brooke (Dossett) did a really good job of handling the ball against constant pressure the entire game. Her ball handling was outstanding. Overall, I was really pleased with our play."

VU vs. South Suburban:

On Friday night in Cincinnati, VU routed South Suburban 78-37 as Dodd scored 18 with the help of three 3-pointers and Olukemi contributed 14. Sophomore Anais Kirvan chipped in with 11 points and sophomore Adelina Vanaga finished with nine points.

Cooper led VU with 10 rebounds, while Kirvan had eight boards.

"I was really pleased with the overall effort. I thought that we played with a lot of intensity and I was extremely pleased with how we shot the ball," said VU Coach Harry Meeks. "With 63 percent shooting on 3-point shots and 45 percent overall on the game, that's outstanding shooting. I was also really pleased with Brooke Dossett at the point, running the offense and handling the team," he added. "I have to say I was also extremely pleased with the '2' position as Adelina (Vanaga) had nine points and Olukemi had 14 points and six steals - with the majority leading to baskets. She played outstanding defense. Overall, everyone contributed."

The Trailblazers will host Lindsey Wilson Monday in VU's home opener at the VU P.E. Complex.
