At VU, we believe sports play an important role in the overall purpose of an educational institution. We support a well-rounded intercollegiate sports program for both men and women and have a strong presence in the NJCAA where we can claim several national championships. But we are equally proud of our individual All-American and All-American Academic athletes who have used their talent to continue their education at four-year colleges.

Lady Blazers top Rend Lake on Dig Pink Night

Vincennes, IN – On a night that Vincennes University celebrated Breast Cancer awareness in the form of their Dig Pink night, the volleyball team downed Rend Lake in 3 matches: 27-25, 25-21, 25-17.

The Trailblazers got off to a tough start as both sides were dead locked in a slug fest. Neither side managed to gain more than a one or two point advantage. Finally, VU managed to gain the upper hand when Sophomore Gabrielle Medrado put up a beautiful set, and freshman Brooke Lasher hammered it home. VUVB took set 1, 27-25.

Sets 2 & 3 were much of the same. They were tight through the middle portion of the set, but the Blazers managed to outlast the Warriors down the stretch. The team took sets 2 & 3 by scores of 25-21, and 25-17.

Sophomore Genesis Milisde and freshman Brooke Lasher both tallied 8 kills, and Milisde also added 4 blocks. Freshman Mackenzie Haworth joined her teammates in the kills column with 7. Gabrielle Medrado was the team leader in assists with 26, and also recorded 9 digs. Freshman Allison Ruddick and sophomore Hannah Bullock also showed up with great numbers in the dig column with 18 & 15 respectively. Sophomore Yasmene Leath rounded-out the stats column for the Trailblazers with 2 blocks.

Coach Sien said after the game, “We had a really sluggish start to the match being behind most of the first set. Things improved some in the second, but Rend Lake really showed how tough of a team they are tonight. We came around and played well in the 3rd to put them away. Hopefully we can use that as a springboard going into the Wallace State Tournament this weekend.”

The Trailblazers move to 23-and-5 on the year with the victory, including winning 9-straight games. That momentum was evident in the national polls this week, as the Trailblazers began receiving votes to again climb back into the top-25 polls. They will hope to continue that strong play this weekend at the Wallace State Fall Bash! The first match for the Lady Blazers will be at 3 p.m. on Friday against Catawba Community College!
