Vincennes, IN – Despite a weekend plagued by rain and high winds, the weather managed to cooperate on the final day of the Region XII Outdoor Championships to allow the men’s track & field team to captured the team title, while the women finished runner-up.
The team got a huge spark to start the day as freshman Evan Franklin dominated the 5,000m run. Franklin captured the Region XII individual title in a time of 15:20, and punched his ticket to NJCAA National Meet in the process.
The momentum carried over throughout the day as sophomore Stoney Prowell would punch his ticket to Hutch as well, this time in the 400. Prowell finished second to teammate Marlowe Mosely in what turned out to be a sweep by VU in the scoring with sophomores Keenen Johnson & Michael Trice finishing 3rd & 4th. Prowell’s time of 48.26 seconds is a season best, and will advance him to the NJCAA National Meet hosted by Hutchinson Community College on May 18th-20th.
Sophomore Richard Griffith had already qualified for Hutch in the first two days of the meet by competing in the grueling decathlon, but would find the toughness to come back strong and qualify in the 400 hurdles this afternoon. Griffith took the win with a time of 54.78 seconds. He was followed by his brother, Ezra Griffith, in the 3rd, & teammate Kevin Johnson in 4th.
Other Trailblazer athletes picking up wins and scoring points on day 3 included: Kevin Johnson winning the 100m dash, Marlowe Mosely winning the 200m dash and 400m run, the 4x1 team of Hunter Ingle, Hayden Conner, Aaron Marable, and Tavin Emlund taking 1st, Jordan Downs won the long jump & the pole vault, Evan Hansen won the high jump, Tyrin Charles won the discus, men’s 4x4 won in 3:22, a 2nd place finish in the 100m dash by Gus Lathrop, a second place finish in the discus by Dustin Clem, Jeleel Swift finished 2nd in the 110 hurdles, Aaron Marble finished 3rd in the 100 & 200, Hunter Ingle finished 3rd in the 5k, Ezra Griffith & Jordan Downs finished 2nd & 3rd in the high jump, & Dustin Clem finished 3rd in the discus.
The Women had an awesome day 3 of competition as well. Fresno State signee Varvara Klyuchnikova followed up her day-2 win in the triple jump by also winning the high jump on day 3 with a mark of 5’8 ¾”. Paige Jones finished 2nd in the event.
Freshman Sydney Davidson continued what has been an outstanding freshman year by qualifying for nationals in the 800m run with a 2nd place finish to Cuyahoga All-America Amber Ruiz-Bueno. Davidson crossed the line in a blistering 2:21.32. Davidson has now qualified for the national meet in the 1500m run, the 800m run, and the 4x800m relay.
Sophomore Anais Da Silva also picked up a win in a thrilling sprint finish in the 1500m run. She kicked down Lansing freshman Casey Mossholder in the last 100 meters to secure the win for the Lady Blazers.
Other athletes picking up wins and scoring points included: freshman Jamesha Western won the discus, & finished 2nd in the shot put after winning the hammer throw yesterday. Paige Jones won the 100m hurdles, Merica Valdez won the pole vault, and the women’s 4x4 team of Sydney Davidson, Maisie Lay, Wendy Catalan, and Paige Jones finished 3rd.
Both teams will have a few days to prepare for their next competition before traveling to Hutchinson, Kansas for the NJCAA National Meet on May 18th-20th.
