No. 1 Trailblazers overcome slow start for 41-point win over SC Sports Academy

OLNEY, Ill. - The NJCAA No. 1 Vincennes University Men's Basketball Team improved to 3-0 on the season with 100-59 thrashing of the South Carolina Sports Academy (SCSA) on Friday night in the first game of the Olney Central Rotary Club of Richland County Rotary Classic.

The Trailblazers had to overcome a slow start that translated into trailing by three points at halftime. Then, VU took command in the second half and cruised to the win as it held The Storm to just 18 points in the second 20 minutes. Six of those SCSA points came on two 3-pointers in the final seconds.

Sophomore A.J. Patty's double-double of 23 points and 12 rebounds led the Trailblazers. VU also got 18 points from sophomore guard Charles Foster and 14 points from freshman guard Ronnie Rousseau.

Guard Xavier McCoy led The SCSA Storm with 14 points, while forward Cody Cox finished with 11 points.

But VU had to overcome eight first half turnovers and SCSA's eight 3-pointers in the first half. The Trailblazers led throughout most of the opening half - and were able to keep the lead, even if it was a small advantage - until The Storm pulled ahead with the help of treys late in the first 20 minutes.

VU made adjustments at halftime to erase the 41-38 deficit it faced heading into the break. Over the first 4:15 of the second half, VU outscored The Storm 12-0 to grab a 50-41 lead, and the Trailblazers then stretched the lead to 64-45 with just less than 12:00 remaining. From there, VU never looked back.

The Trailblazers hit 6-of-12 from beyond the arc and pulled down 30 of their 56 rebounds while pulling away on the scoreboard. VU shot 23-of-38 (.605) overall from the floor in the second half, which improved its shooting percentage for the entire game to just over 51 percent. Meanwhile, VU held SCSA to just 6-of-30 (20 percent) from the floor in the second half.

The Trailblazers return to Olney, IL, on Saturday to take on Ancilla on the second evening of the Rotary Classic. Tip-off for VU will again be at 6:30 p.m. ("Vincennes time").
