Taking the Mound with Chance Hitchcock

Vincennes, IN – The Vincennes University Baseball team has been on a roll of late. A big reason for that success is the outstanding pitching by freshman right-hander, Chance Hitchcock. We caught up with Hitchcock a few weeks back to see what has helped him to become such a force on the mound in his first year at Vincennes.

Hitchcock is a native of Martinsville, IN, where from the very beginning, there was no doubt he was going to be a stand-out on the baseball field.  Chance says that he began playing baseball when he was about 4 years old. “My dad introduced it to me, and I just instantly fell in love with the game”.  He continued to explain that his parents have always been a big part of his baseball career. “My parents have always believed in me, and sacrificed so much for me to be able to live out my dream of playing baseball I will never be able to thank them enough for that.”

He may have started playing the game because of his parents and coaches, but he has continued to play at a high level throughout his career because of his love for the sport. “My favorite thing about baseball is the excitement, and the adrenaline rush that it gives you. There’s nothing better than having a baseball in your hand, and to be on a baseball field.”

Hitchcock chose VU because of the small-town feel, and because it was relatively close to home. That decision has paid off for both himself, and the Trailblazers. This season Hitchcock has pitched 41 & 2/3 innings, and is averaging 9.5 strike outs-per outing. Both are team-high’s for VU, and both currently sit just outside the top-50 in the NJCAA.

Hitchcock reflected upon his freshman season, “My freshman year has been very eye opening for me. College baseball is not exactly what I expected. Although, I feel good about how much I have grown physically and mentally over the year.”

He also gave some parting advice to high school athletes, considering competing in college. “Be very patient when you are making the transition. At first, it can be very frustrating, but once you get it, it’s the best time of your life. You have to trust the process. I would highly recommend for players to try playing at the next level. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I know that when baseball is over for me, I’ll be extremely sad. So why not enjoy the sport for as long as you can?”

Chance is rounding out his freshman year at Vincennes University, and majoring in Sports Management. He hopes to attend a 4-year school, and continue his baseball career after graduating from VU. However, for now, he says he is content to just enjoy every second of being on the mound in a VU uniform, and working every day to get better. The Trailblazer’s next game will be at Jerry Blemker Field on Monday vs. Olney Central, and there is no doubt who will be starting on the bump for the Blazers.
