Trailblazers Set to Race at Greater Louisville Classic this Weekend

Vincennes, IN – The #6 Vincennes University Women’s Cross Country team, and #9 Men’s team will head east this Saturday to compete in one of the largest, most competitive, and best cross country atmosphere’s in the Midwest, the Greater Louisville Classic.

“This weekend is a great opportunity for us on both sides. We will get to see Lansing for the first time this year, as well Maccomb. Both teams are top-20 ranked teams in the NJCAA, and Region XII teams.” Said Coach Blake Albrecht about the meet this weekend.

The Blazers have had a spectacular start to the 2017 cross country season. Both teams start the season ranked in the top-10 in the NJCAA for their respective genders, and both teams have finished in the top 10 in both meets they have competed in this season.

Anais Da Silva became the first-ever Vincennes University athlete to capture the little state individual title, and her 8th place finish at the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships is the best-ever in Trailblazer history. The 12-time NJCAA All-American, and owner of 8 school records will look to continue her success this weekend. Last year, Da Silva clocked the 2nd fastest time in school history on her way to a top-20 finish.

Fellow Sophomores Maisie Lay, Sydney Davidson, and Nacketa Scanlon have also had solid seasons thus far. Lay ran the 3rd fastest time in VU history at Eastern Illinois to open the year, and became just the 3rd Vincennes athlete to join the sub-19 minute club.

On the men’s side, freshman Marcus Graham has exploded onto the collegiate scene in his first two meets. Graham finished in the top-18 overall in both meets this season, and his 5th place finish in the little state division of the Indiana Intercollegiate Championships is one of the best in school history.

With sophomore All-American Evan Franklin now healthy, the team will look to click on all cylinders.

Coach Albrecht continued to say, “We have had a great couple weeks of practice, and the break in the weather should be a great opportunity for our kids to go out and run some very fast times. This is the time of the year where we really start to wind things up, and start throwing down fast times in preparation for the post-season. With Evan healthy for the men, and Maisie back to 100% for the women, I expect some really great performances this weekend.”

Both VUXC teams will be racing at EP Tom Sawyer Park in Lousiville, Kentucky. The men will race at Noon, the women will race at 12:45 p.m.
