Vincennes University Baseball Drops Double-Header at Cleveland State CC

Cleveland, TN - The Vincennes University Baseball team dropped to 1 - 5 on the season after losing two at Cleveland State CC on Sunday, February 18th.

The Trailblazers lost game 1 of the double-header 10 - 1. Cleveland State CC limited VU to 3 hits in the game, 2 of which were by P/DH Walker Paris (2-3), and C Kyle Stuckey (1-3, run scored) had the other one. In the top of the 4th inning Stuckey lead off with a bunt single. Jonathan Blackwell’s sacrifice bunt with an error on the pitcher placed runners on first and second base. 3B Jake Bedwell (0-2, sac bunt) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over to second and third base. LF Jared Semershiem (0-2, RBI, sac bunt) brought in Stuckey with a squeeze play, tying the score at 1 - 1.

On the mound freshman Walker Paris took the loss, throwing 3.1 innings followed by freshman Jacob Cochrum throwing 1.2 innings and freshman RHP Austin Walden threw a scoreless bottom of the 6th. Cleveland State CC scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 4th, and 3 more in the bottom of the 5th, bringing the lead to 10 - 1.

In game 2 the Trailblazers battled back but lost a 5 - 3 lead in the bottom of the 6th inning and lost the game 6 - 5. In the top of the 3rd innings down 1 - 0 freshman CF Tyler Estes (1-4, runs scored, HR, RBI) lead off the innings with a solo home run, his 2nd on the season, tying the score at 1 - 1. In the top of the 4th inning down 3 - 1 sophomore 2B Jonathan Blackwell hit a solo home run, his 1st of the season, cutting the deficit to 3 - 2. In the top of the 6th inning sophomore PH Garrett Camp reached 1B on a catcher’s interference, Camp then stole second base. An error by the SS for Cleveland State CC allowed Jake Bedwell to reach first base. RF Bricem Thompson walked to load the bases. Sophomore PH Eli Knust walked forcing in the tying run, making the score 3 - 3. A wild pitch to hitter Tyler Estes allowed Jake Bedwell to score and an overthrow to the pitcher covering home plate allowed Bricem Thompson to score, giving the Trailblazers the 5 - 3 lead going into the bottom of the 6th inning.

Freshman RHP Isaiah Davis started the game throwing 4 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and struck out 1. Freshman RHP Logan Hollingsworth came on in relief and threw a scoreless 5th inning and got one out in the 6th inning. Back-to-back hits placed runners at second and third. Sophomore LHP Noah Phipps came on and retired the first hitter he faced and the hit the next batter to load the bases. Freshman RHP Luke Lancaster came in. A passed ball allowed a run to score, then a ground ball error on Garrett Camp allowed runners from second and third to score giving Cleveland State CC a 6 - 5 lead.

The Trailblazers will be at home for the first time this season this weekend when Vincennes hosts Ancilla College for 1 game on Friday February 23rd and a double-header on February 24th. Friday’s game is set to start a 2 p.m. eastern, and game 1 of the double-header on Saturday is set to start at noon eastern.

Scholarship Fund

Trailblazer Scholarship Fund - The VU Foundation awarded a record $1.4 million scholarship dollars of VU Foundation and University funds for the 2015-2016 school year to incoming and returning VU students.  

These included awards to students from 10 states across the country and 4 international awards.  

Currently the VU Foundation manages over 540 scholarship and department funds, with 259 new funds created in just the last 10 years.
