Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers Use Second-Half Surge to Claim 14th Straight Victory

Vincennes, IN – The Vincennes University Lady Trailblazers hosted Rend Lake College in a District P showdown. VU came out on top, 89 – 60, earning the Lady Trailblazers their 14th straight victory.

Vincennes got off to a slow start against the Lady Warriors, ending the first quarter down 24 – 23. VU fought back in the second quarter though to claim a 6-point halftime lead. Sophomore Ladellia Maggett led the Lady Trailblazers with 11 points at the break, adding an impressive 7 assists in the first 20 minutes of play. In all the lead changed hands 5 times in the first half, and the score was tied 3 times.

Vincennes jumped on Rend Lake out of the locker room to take control of the game. The Lady Blazers began the second half on a 12 – 0 run and gave themselves a 56 – 38 lead. The VU bench took over the game after that, scoring 25 of the team’s 45 second-half points. Freshmen Janiya Davis and Sofia Besedina each scored 6 points in the final two quarters. But the main key for Vincennes tonight was their stifling defense, which allowed VU to get 13 steals off 24 Rend Lake turnovers.

4 VU players reached double-figures; Ladellia Maggett brought in a game-high 17 points, 9 assists, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Janiya Davis finished her night with 13 points and 3 rebounds, fellow freshman Marquitta Easley also ended with 13 points, and Sofia Besedina reached 10 points. Freshman Ivanda Hudjakova came very close to a double-double tonight with 9 points and 9 rebounds.

The Lady Trailblazers remain at home on Wednesday, February 7th, when Vincennes hosts Shawnee as part of a men’s and women’s double-header. The VU women’s game will start the action at 5:00 p.m. eastern, with the men’s game to follow at approx. 7:00 p.m.
