Veteran coach Gary Sien was chosen in June 2016 to head up the Trailblazer program. Sien’s first season as head coach at VU was also the first season the Trailblazers would compete at the NJCAA D-I level. Trailblazers were ranked #20 in the NJCAA D-I National Poll for the week of September 20th, after a 13 – 1 start to their season. Vincennes finished 29 – 9 with an amazing 10 – 0 record at home. VU won the Blazer Classic Tournament and reached the semi-finals of the NJCAA District J playoff tournament.
Last season, Sien helped guide the Trailblazers 30-12 record while reaching the semi final of the NJCAA District J tournament. For the second straight year, VU earned a #20 ranking (weeks of Sept. 6th and 20th) and spent a total of four weeks in the national polls.
The Trailblazers also finished as Showdown on the Wabash Tournament champions.
Six Trailblazers, under Sien, have committed to 4-year programs.
Sien brings a wealth of success in NJCAA volleyball, as well as valuable experience at the four-year program level. He was the head coach at Kankakee Community College for the past 16 seasons.
In addition to amassing 525 wins and leading 14 NJCAA Top-25 seasons with the Cavalier program, Sien oversaw two NJCAA Region 4 championship teams (2001, 2004), produced five NJCAA All-Americans and 34 All-Region 4 student-athletes and saw the Kankakee program turn out seven NJCAA Academic All-Americans.
He was also rewarded with NJCAA Region 4 Coach of the Year honors four times.
A 1989 graduate of Trinity International University, Sien was a team captain for the Trojan men’s volleyball program for three seasons and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player as both a sophomore and junior. He was also selected to be a member of the first Athletes In Action men’s volleyball team to travel to South America in 1986.
Sien has logged 31 seasons in the collegiate coaching ranks (Gary Sien's NJCAA volleyball coaching career, by season). He was a head coach in 29 of those years. In addition to the 16 seasons as the women’s volleyball coach at Kankakee, he has put in nine years as a men’s volleyball coach and six years as a women’s coach at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) level, as well as four seasons leading a National Christian College Athletic Association program.
