Apply for a Social Security Number

Once you have received an on-campus job offer and completed the Employer Authorization Form (see On-Campus Employment for more information), the next step is to apply for a Social Security Number.

To begin, you will need to fill out and print the Application For A Social Security Card. If you would like your international advisor to review, please submit to International Student Affairs at the same time as the employer authorization form.

As a reminder, you should receive an email within 1-3 business days instructing you to pick up your work authorization letter from the Office of International Student Affairs. You will need to take this to the Social Security Administration Office with you.

Standard Required Documents

In order to complete the Social Security Card Application process, you will need to provide proof of immigration status, age, and identity by providing the following original documents:

-  Valid passport
-  Form I-20
-  I-94
-  Application for a Social Security Card
-  Work Authorization Letter from International Student Affairs

Once you have completed all of the steps, you may take your completed application and original documents to your local Social Security Administration. If you need transportation assistance please contact International Student Affairs to make arrangements.

Once your have turned in all necessary documentation to the Social Security Administration Office, it will take approximately 2-3 weeks before you will receive your Social Security Card. Upon receipt, you must submit a copy of your Social Security Card to the Office of International Student Affairs and pick up your HR Blue Sheet before you are able to begin your on-campus job.

Be sure to keep your original Social Security card in a safe place. Do not carry it with you in your wallet or purse. Be careful who you give this number to in order to avoid falling victim to identity theft. This number and the resulting record are yours for your lifetime.
