No. 1 Trailblazers improve to 8-0 on season with solid road win; NJCAA District 16 opener results in 86-58 win over Lake Land

MATTOON, Ill. – The NJCAA No. 1 Vincennes Trailblazers improved to 8-0 to open the season and won their opening District 16 game of the campaign Saturday night by defeating the host Lake Land Lakers 86-58 in Mattoon, IL.

Sophomore Mychal Mulder scored 20 lead a balanced VU scoring attack. The Trailblazers also got 10 of freshman Keith Mack’s career-high 16 in the second half as VU maintained its double-digit lead throughout the second 20 minutes. The best offensive feel-good story of the night for the Trailblazers was sophomore Jaelan Manson’s career-high 15 points, as he went 5-for-8 from 3-point land. In addition, freshman Ronnie Rousseau finished with 14 points. Half of Rousseau’s offensive production was VU’s first seven points of the game.

Mack also pulled down seven rebounds, including four of VU’s 11 offensive boards. Rousseau dished out six assists and Manson registered four assists and three steals.

As a team, VU posted an outstanding effort, including a solid defensive job. The Trailblazers shot 30-for-67 from the floor (11-for-23 in treys), hit 15-of-19 free throws and committed only eight turnovers and 17 fouls, while holding Lake Land in check with eight steals and eight blocked shots.

The game was never much in doubt for the Trailblazers. VU led 9-0 before the Lakers scored on a free throw. Lake Land’s first field goal didn’t come until even a few minutes later than that. By that time, the Trailblazers had to endure one first-half run by the Lakers and then cruised to the win.

VU will return home Tuesday for a women’s-men’s doubleheader vs. Olney Central at the VU P.E. Complex. It will be the District 16 opener for the women and a chance for the VU men to go to 2-0 in district competition. The ladies will tip off at 5 p.m. and the men will take the floor at about 7 p.m.

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
