Trailblazers jump on Wabash Valley early to post 100-72 win on the road and improve to 24-0

MT. CARMEL, Ill. - The NJCAA No. 2 Vincennes University Men's Basketball Team jumped on host Wabash Valley from the opening tip Wednesday night and never let up on the way to a 100-72 win that improved VU to 24-0 on the season and 14-0 in NJCAA District 16 play.

The victory also gave VU a regular-season sweep of the Warriors after the Trailblazers posted a 77-54 decision over WVC at the VU P.E. Complex in early December.

In the latest VU-WVC match-up, the Trailblazers pounced from the get-go. VU was up 17-5 in the opening few minutes with the help of a pair of 3-pointers by sophomore Charles Foster and two more treys by sophomore Mychal Mulder. Foster and Mulder both had 21 points to lead VU. Sophomore Donte' McGill had 18 points and sophomore Everett Clemons dished out 10 assists, while Foster registered eight assists, five rebounds and four steals. Mulder also had nine rebounds to go along with his five treys.

The quick start staked VU to a 51-23 halftime lead. In the second half, the two teams played even in points with 49 each. However, several of WVC's second half points came on late 3-pointers after the game was a foregone conclusion.

VU, which turned the ball over only four times, shot 50 percent (37-for-74) from the floor, overall, and a blistering 48 percent (11-for-23) from beyond the arc. In addition, the Trailblazers held a 42-24 advantage in terms of points in the paint. VU got points on the interior from several contributors, including Keith Mack with eight points and A.J. Patty and Makur Puou with six each.

VU will host Shawnee at 7 p.m. Saturday, following a VU women's game vs. Shawnee at 5 p.m. On that night, VU will  honor the first NJCAA Div. I Men's Basketball National Champion in Vincennes University history. The 1964-65 squad assembled a 28-6 record on the way to defeating Burlington (now known as Southeastern (IA) Community College) by an 80-76 score.

VU will welcome team members and some members back to campus Saturday for a day of activities and reminiscing. The team will be formally honored at halftime of the men's game.

Play4Kay

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
