No. 12 Vincennes University men’s basketball closes regular season with win

VINCENNES, Ind. -  The No. 12 Vincennes University men’s basketball team has closed the books on the regular season after a 78-48 victory over Southwestern Illinois College on Wednesday night at the P.E. Complex. This brings VU’s record to 26-4.

The Blazers looked to be caught in a tough battle with against SWIC in the first half, with the score staying within three points for the majority. But the Trailblazers settled in nearing the end of the first half by going on a run and setting the tone for the next. Going in to the second half VU didn’t allow a single point by the opposition for the opening six minutes.

VU Statistical Leaders

Sophomore Colton Sandage (Bloomington, Ill.) put up 11 total points on the night, and went 3-for-4 from behind the arc. Sophomore Kevin Osawe (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore Chuka Mekkam (Portland, Ore.) had 18 points, hitting 4 out of 5 treys, and also managed four assists.

VU Coach Todd Franklin says. . .

“I thought our defensive intensity was really good tonight, I thought we guarded well all night. Offensively we sputtered a little bit in the first half, but then I thought in the last five or six minutes of the first half we really started to settle in. We played good D, and they really only scored when we let up a little, when we locked in, they couldn’t score. The harder, and more intense we are, the more the points come. We can’t be complacent when we get a lead.”

“As far as the district tournament goes, it doesn’t matter who we end up playing. Right now we’re only focused on us and playing our game.”

Next up

The Trailblazers kick off the district tournament Monday, March 2 at Rend Lake College in Ina, Ill. Times and opponents are TBD and will be posted on both the Vincennes University Athletics website as well as all athletics social media platforms.

The Vincennes University Athletic Department hosts Play4Kay and raises donations for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund annually. VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
