VU Baseball drops DH at Cleveland State CC

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Vincennes University Baseball Team dropped both games of a doubleheader Saturday at Cleveland State when VU scored seven runs in each contest but was unable to keep the host Cougars at bay. The Trailblazers (0-6) lost by scores of 12-7 and 8-7.

Cleveland State had also topped VU 11-4 on Friday.

In Game 1, sophomore third baseman Lance Myers blasted a grand slam home run to do most of the damage in VU’s five-run second inning and put the Trailblazers ahead 6-4 in the early slugfest-like innings. But Cleveland State plated two more runs in the bottom of the second to tie it up and, with the exception of a fourth inning run for the Cougars, both teams were quiet until Cleveland State put five runs on the board in the bottom of the sixth.

When VU came to the plate in the top of the seventh, facing a six-run deficit, the Cougars’ Drew Korzybski held the Trailblazers to a single run to prevent any thoughts of a rally and comeback, ending the seven-inning game.

Besides Myers’ bomb and four runs driven in, VU was able to manage only two other hits. Jared Lauer had a triple and Brad Hartman added a hit. Hartman also had two VU’s other two RBI.Game 2 saw both teams get on the board early again and sophomore designated hitter Alex Rojas homered and doubled as part of a 2-for-3, two RBI day, but a three-run second inning and a four-run fifth helped Cleveland State edge the Trailblazers in the end. VU led 5-4 in the fifth when the Cougars put up the four runs to go ahead 8-5.

Like the first game, VU was unable to rally back in front, scoring only twice in the seventh as Cleveland State got the sweep.

Along with Rojas’ homer, Hartman was 2-for-4 and Matt Kunce drove in a pair of runs. Other RBI were by Jake Carey and Drew Johnston.

The Trailblazers will now prepare for their 2015 home opener when they host Ancilla on Saturday at Jerry Blemker Field. VU and the Chargers will play a doubleheader Saturday with the Game 1 first pitch at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the third and final game of the series will begin at 11 a.m.
