VU Track & Field sharpens qualifying times on second day at GVSU Big Meet

ALLENDALE, Mich. - On the second day of the Grand Valley State University Big Meet in Allendale, MI, the Vincennes University Track & Field Teams' performances were highlighted by still more qualifying marks for the March 6 and 7 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships, some improvements on some previous championship qualifying efforts and yet another VU school record.

Sophomore Robert Murphy continued to add VU history to his Trailblazer legacy as he broke the school record in the 800 Meter Run with a time of 1:53.22. Sophomore TaPring Goatee provided herself with yet another chance to rewrite the VU women's record books when she turned in a national meet qualifying time of 2:17.49 in the women's 800 Meter Run.

Also, freshman Kelly O'Shea shaved time off her previous 800 Meter Run qualifying effort. On Saturday, O'Shea had a time of 2:20.70 in the event.

In addition, sophomore Hanna Wise's 59.49 qualified nationally in the 400 Meter Dash. Finally, the Trailblazer Men's Distance Medley Relay Team of Michael Mest, Alex Moses, Adam Johnson and Murphy improved on its previous national championship qualifying effort of 10:23.14.

Murphy and Goatee had started their latest assaults on the VU Track & Field record books Friday on the first day of the meet.

That day, Murphy turned in a VU record and top national junior college time of 4:09.39 in the Men's One Mile Run. Goatee set another school mark in the Women's One Mile Run with a time of 5:13.26.
Another Trailblazer highlight from Friday was freshman Candela Guijarro's effort in the Women's High Jump when she leaped 5 feet, 8.5 inches, to move into third place on the national junior college list in that event.
VU wraps up the indoor regular season at the Feb. 20 Friday Night Special at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL.
The March 6 and 7 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships will be at the Albuquerque Convention Center in Albuquerque, NM.

VU Women’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Harry Meeks has a special connection to the late Yow, who was the longtime coach at North Carolina State. He had the pleasure of meeting her while he was an assistant coach at Western Carolina University. This left a lasting impression on him and made this cause important to him and the Trailblazers.
