May 13, 2019 / Trailblazers earn sweep against John Wood

QUINCY, Ill. – The Vincennes University baseball team completed a three-game Mid-West Athletic Conference series sweep of John Wood with a 3-1 win on Saturday.

The Trailblazers tied the game at 1-all in the top of the third inning. The contest remained deadlocked until VU scored two runs in the final seventh innings.

Sophomore Kavan Crowell pitched a complete game and gave up six hits in seven innings. He faced 26 batters, struck out three and walked one.

Sophomore Bricem Thompson hit 2-for-3.  Sophomore Treven Madden contributed a RBI and a hit. Sophomore Caleb Helms had a sacrifice. Sophomore Isaiah Davis also had a hit.

The Trailblazers were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but the second game was canceled.

VU won 9-4 and 11-2 on Friday.

In the first game, the Trailblazers scored four runs in the third inning for a 4-0 lead. They went up 6-1 in the fifth and led 8-4 after seven innings.

Sophomore Walker Paris went 3-for-5 with a RBI. Freshman Sean Becker was 2-for-6 with a RBI. Thompson hit 2-for-5 with a double and drove in a run.

Freshman Ryan Robison hit a home run.

Freshman pitcher Nate Toone struck out four batters in six innings. He gave up six hits.

Paris earned the save. He struck out three and allowed three hits in 2.2 innings.

In the Trailblazers’ 11-2 victory against John Wood, freshman Trent Weiss, sophomore Will Randell and freshman Nolan Clark hit home runs.

Weiss drove in three runs, hit 3-for-4, stole a base and scored two runs.

Clark collected three RBIs.

Sophomore Luke Lancaster was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts and one walk in four innings. He allowed five hits and two runs.

Freshman Noah Woodward earned the save. He struck out two and gave up three hits in three innings.

VU finishes the regular season 25-28 overall and 13-18 in the conference.

The Trailblazers play next in the NJCAA Division II Baseball Midwest District Championship May 16-20, 2019 at the Corn Crib Stadium in Normal, Illinois.

Each district champion qualifies for the NJCAA Division II Baseball World Series in Enid, Oklahoma May 25-June 1, 2019.
