As of this posting, the Knox County Health Department has confirmed there have been no diagnosed cases of coronavirus in the county and VU is not aware of anyone in the Vincennes University community who has been infected with the virus. We are monitoring the situation closely and working to ensure students meet their academic goals, along with providing a safe environment. We are collaborating with our colleagues at other institutions to ensure best safety practices for our students, faculty, staff and stakeholders. Please know and remember that we are all in this together. Safety for all is the number one priority during this fluid situation. We will provide additional updates as the situation changes and new information becomes available.

CLASSES & STUDENTS

 

Are my classes canceled? 

No, classes are not canceled. Classes at all VU sites, including online, will resume on March 23. Courses will be delivered online or in alternative delivery formats for the remainder of the semester. 

Beginning March 23rd, all Spring courses will have an associated Blackboard component. Blackboard is Vincennes University’s online learning management software that will allow students to continue their learning in a virtual environment. By March 22nd, students will see a Blackboard icon when they sign into MyVU. Clicking on that icon will enable students to see the Blackboard shells for each of the courses they are enrolled in. In the “My Announcements” box for each course, the student will find a greeting from the instructor and an explanation of how the course will unfold for the remainder of the semester.

 

How will I register for summer/fall classes?

In the near future the University will provide direction on course registration for summer/fall of 2020.  At this time, efforts are focused on the transition to online class delivery. 

 

I am an online student. When do my classes start? 

All classes, regardless of delivery, will resume on Monday, March 23.

 

Can I still enroll in online courses?

Enrollment for second 8-week courses will remain open until March 23rd.

 

When can I retrieve items from the residence hall?

Vincennes University’s residence halls will not be reopening and will stay closed for the remainder of the semester.​ All students living in the residence halls are being asked to move out beginning this weekend. To facilitate the retrieval of personal belongings, promote an orderly process, and observe good social distancing practices, a schedule for move-out has been developed and can be found below. Students will be e-mailed instructions about the check-out process.  Students will not be allowed to stay overnight in the residence halls during the move out process.  Guests will be prohibited in all University Residences during move out.

 

Where will my mail be delivered?

You are responsible for updating your address with USPS and other mail providers. Please also make these updates on your online shopping sites. Packages delivered by UPS, Fed X etc. will be returned to sender. Please check on any package deliveries you are expecting.

 

If I have already moved out all of my items can I mail my key to the university?

If you have already left campus and took your room key(s) with you, please mail it back to our office with your name, hall, and room number. The mail should be addressed to: Housing/Residential Life, Vincennes University, 1002 N 1st St Vincennes IN 47591.This will complete your residence hall check out process. You will receive an email verifying that your key(s) has been received and processed. Your room will be checked by Hall Staff in the next few weeks. Please note we are not responsible for keys lost in the mail or transit.

 

I did not get a chance to fill out my housing contract or request to reside in the university owned apartments. How can I complete this?

We anticipate having instructions on how to complete your 2020-21 Housing Contract and application for the new French Quarter or 3rd street apartments on our page very soon. An email will be sent to all student who were residing in the residence halls during the Spring semester.

 

How are the residence halls and facilities being cleaned?

Physical Plant staff are operating with elevated cleaning frequencies. Our cleaning frequencies are increased in high touch areas such as door handles, push bars and elevator buttons as well as public restrooms in the residence halls, common areas and through all campus facilities.

 

What if I cannot get back to campus to retrieve my belongings?

If you are not able to retrieve your belongings or cannot find a proxy to retrieve your belongings, you will need to email the Housing/Residential Life Office at housing@vinu.edu to schedule a later move out date. Extensions will be granted for extenuating circumstance for a reasonable period of time.

What if a student has no place to go? 

VU is aware that there may be some individuals living in VU housing who have a unique situation requiring them to remain on campus. To request approval to remain in on-campus housing, please contact VU’s Housing Office at (812) 888-4225 or by email at housing@vinu.edu.
 

How will my lab/clinical courses be conducted?

 

Lab Courses:  At this time, we are asking instructors to look for creative ways to provide students with lab simulations. Courses will be delivered online or in alternative delivery formats for the remainder of the semester. Vincennes University understands you will have questions regarding how your course will be conducted. By March 22nd, students will see a Blackboard icon when they sign into MyVU. Clicking on that icon will enable students to see the Blackboard shells for each of the courses they are enrolled in. Clinical/Student Teaching Courses:  Beginning March 23rd, clinical and student teaching courses will resume as normal and students are expected to attend unless otherwise directed. In a situation where site availability is closed, students will work with their instructor and/or program director to develop a plan for fulfilling the remaining program requirements. The plan will be submitted to the Provost. The College will defer to program accreditation requirements regarding clinical/student teaching requirements.  This may include:

  • Substituting clinical requirements with simulations where appropriate/approved.
  • Completing clinical requirements/student teaching when sites become available (may extend into summer or be completed in Spring semester with extended hours)
  • Completing clinical requirements/student teaching at another site.

Internships:  Beginning March 23rd, internship/externship courses will resume as normal and students are expected to attend unless otherwise directed. If an internship/externship opportunity is suspended, the student will work with their faculty member and, in collaboration with the Dean of the College, develop a plan for continued education.

Other Work-based Learning Experiences:  While the transition to online and alternative delivery learning environments should not have a direct impact on work-based learning experiences, employers may decide to suspend or modify such experiences.  Please work directly with your employer to determine options for continuing your employment during this period.

 

I am a Vincennes University dual credit student and my high school closed. What does that mean for me?  

If your school corporation is closed because of COVID-19, follow the directions provided to you by your school. Vincennes University will work with dual enrollment students who are impacted by local school closures.

 

Can I still visit the VU Testing Center? And what about proctored tests? 

Yes, the VU Testing Center will be open, but please contact the location directly at 812.888.5404 to ensure there is ample capacity to account for appropriate social distancing. 

 

I am enrolled in a 16-week class. What happens with my previously assigned work and due dates?

Due dates for both 16-week and 8-week courses will be adjusted to reflect the new term dates of March 23rd to May 15, 2020.

 

What will happen with the semester’s schedule and grades?

VU is extending the semester for one week to May 15, 2020. Classes will be provided online, or in alternative delivery formats for the remainder of the semester. We are working on contingency plans for grading and potential impacts for those who are expecting to graduate this term.

 

Will there still be tutoring services available and will the Shake Library be opened?

Tutoring Services will be offered for students in the Shake Library once it opens. Additionally, the University has online tutoring for a number of courses. Information about these services will be shared once the semester restarts.


INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

 

Can nonimmigrant students participate in online classes from outside the U.S. and still maintain their nonimmigrant status?

Yes, nonimmigrant students can temporarily engage in distance-learning, either from within the U.S. or outside the country, in light of COVID-19. SEVP will provide updated guidance as additional information concerning the scope and length of this situation becomes clearer. 

In evaluating these changes, SEVP is focused on ensuring that nonimmigrant students are able to continue to make normal progress in a full course of study as required by federal regulations. SEVP intends to be flexible with temporary adaptations.

 

Will students be able to return to the United States if they are continuing their studies outside of the country as a result of COVID-19? 

Students who continue to make normal progress in their course of study remain eligible for admission into the United States. However, because of the changing array of travel restrictions, nonimmigrant students should refer to their local embassy’s website through the U.S. Department of State for any updates about visa issuance. Also, DHS and CDC websites both provide information about current travel restrictions to the United States. 


FACILITIES,  EVENTS, & VISITORS

 

Will all campus facilities be open for the rest of the semester?

Operation schedules campus-wide have been adjusted to encourage social distancing. 

 

Vincennes University Student Recreation Center, P.E. Complex, and Aquatic Center will close its facilities effective March 19, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. The VU Bowling Center is closed. The facilities will stay closed for two weeks. We anticipate re-opening the facilities on April 6, 2020, but please understand this date is subject to change.

 

Are there restrictions on campus visitors?

Vincennes University encourages individuals to utilize telephone, email, or other means of communications to speak with campus personnel.  Should an onsite visit be necessary social distancing protocols will be in effect.

 

Is commencement canceled? 

Despite our best hopes for being able to hold traditional commencement ceremonies at various locations, VU is cancelling all face-to-face commencements scheduled through May 16.  VU is exploring options for “virtual” commencement activities and will be updating students as soon as those arrangements are finalized.

 

When is the last date to be able to petition to graduate this spring?

Students who anticipate graduating in May should be aware of the following:

A Petition to Graduate must be on file with the Registrar's Office. The Petition to Graduate deadline has been extended to Friday, April 3, 2020. Students should contact their advisor to initiate their petition.  Students who have difficulty connecting with their advisor should call the Registrar;s office at 812.888.4220 or by email to records@vinu.edu.

 

I am a potential student planning to visit campus, should I still visit?

VU Admissions is discouraging on campus visits through at least mid-April. All individuals with scheduled visits through admissions are encouraged to reschedule. Due to continued conversations concerning the COVID-19 virus and in an effort to provide a safe and healthy campus environment for students, staff, and visitors, Vincennes University has decided to cancel the PreVU Day open house events scheduled for March 20 and 21 as well as April 17 and 18. A plan is currently being developed as to the best method of disbursing the information provided at PreVU Days events. Once a decision is made, communication will be sent out to all registered students and included on the VU website. 

 

Will VU’s recreational facilities remain open? 

No. The VU Student Recreation Center, P.E. Complex, and Aquatic Center will close its facilities effective March 19, 2020 at 5:00 p.m. The VU Bowling Center is closed. Vincennes University continues to monitor and follow the recommendations of the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) with respect to the coronavirus.

 

Is the Shake Learning Resource Center (LRC) Open?
During the move-out dates of Friday-Sunday, March 20-22, and Saturday, March 28, the Shake LRC is open to current faculty and staff only.  Other than those move-out dates and until April 3, the Shake LRC will be open to current faculty, staff, and VU students with a valid student ID.  LRC hours for all offices during this time will be 8:00a-4:30p Monday through Friday.  Outside of the move-out dates, students may continue to use all services, should enter through the building's main doors, and carry their ID. 

 

What should be done with books checked out of the Library?

Bring library books with you when vacating the residence halls. While students are not permitted in the LRC during move-out, there are carts available in the residence halls along with the Drop off box outside of the LRC for you to return books. 


TRAVEL - STUDENT, FACULTY, & STAFF

I traveled over spring break, should I come back or wait? 

At this time spring break has been extended for all VU students. Classes will resume on March 23 and will continue in online or alternative delivery formats for the remainder of the semester. FINANCIAL AID

 

Will my financial aid change as a result of online instruction?

As long as you continue in the same courses, your financial aid will not change.

 

Will my room & board and meal plan charges be reduced?

All students who vacate housing will have their account credited for the unoccupied days.  All students who have a meal plan will have their account credited for the daily rate of the meal plan. The applicable dates for these calculations will be from Monday, March 16 through Friday, May 8. After applying the credits, refunds will be issued if a credit balance exists on the student’s account.  We are actively working on these credits and we will be sending out correspondence within the next week. What happens if I withdraw from one or more courses due to COVID-19?

In general, students must continue to maintain minimum enrollment requirements for their aid.  Before withdrawing from a course, please consult your academic advisor and the financial aid office.  Withdrawing from courses could negatively affect Spring 2020 aid. Please email fa@vinu.edu or call (812) 888-4361 to discuss the financial implications.

 

What if I am enrolled in a second 8-week class and I fail to show up/begin attendance?  Second 8 week classes begin Monday, March 23.   Failure to begin a second 8-week course could negatively affect Spring 2020 aid.  Before deciding not to start a second 8-week course, please consult your academic advisor and the financial aid office.

 

When will book buyback and rental returns occur? 

Book buyback and rental returns will occur May 11 through May 18.   There will be future correspondence on how to return your books.   Please continue to monitor vinu.edu for updates.

 

I am on Federal Work Study.  Can I continue to work? 

Yes. Work study employees may work based on the University’s need for their respective job responsibilities, however.  The student should contact his/her supervisor to determine if work is available.  

 

What happens if I am a work study student working at an off-campus partner location and that organization closes due to the COVID-19?

Per the Department of Education: “For a Federal Work Study student who is employed by an employer that closes as a result of COVID-19, the institution may continue paying the student Federal Work Study wages during that closure if it occurred after the beginning of the term, the institution is continuing to pay its other employees” (including faculty and staff), and for external partners the partner continues to pay their portion of the CWS wages.”
