VUXC Men & Women Ranked Top-10 in Week 1 NJCAA Cross Country Polls

New Orleans, LA – The Vincennes University Cross Country teams both start the year ranked in the top-10 in the NJCAA Coaches Polls for Week #1. The Women slide into the #6 spot, while the men begin the season at #9.

“I am really glad that our kids are getting some recognition for all of the hard work they are putting in this year, and put in this summer.” Said Head Cross Country Coach Blake Albrecht. “However, I also wanted to remind our athletes that although that’s a good place to start, we still have a lot of work to do. Those rankings are a good indicator of where we COULD stack up, but on race day, all of those rankings go out the window, and the winner is determined by who wants to race the hardest.”

The Women’s Cross-Country Team begins the season ranked #6 in the NJCAA Coaches Poll for week #1. That is the highest opening week team ranking in school history, as well as the highest-ranking period in school history for the women of VUXC.

Sophomore Anais Da Silva became the first ever Vincennes University Athlete to win the Little State race at the Indiana Intercollegiates Championships hosted by Purdue last week, and her 8th place overall finish was the best by a Trailblazer in school history.

Fellow Sophomore Maisie Lay also notched the 3rd fastest time in Trailblazer history at Eastern Illinois in her season opener by clocking a time of 18:56, and leading several Vincennes athletes to near personal bests.

Like the women, the #9 overall spot in the NJCAA Coaches Poll for week #1 is the best opening poll in Trailblazer history for the men, and one spot shy of their best overall ranking from the 2016 season at #8.

Freshman Marcus Graham has had a great start to the season. Graham has finished in the top-20 at both Eastern Illinois and the Indiana Intercollegiates Championships to start the season. Graham finished 5th in the Little State division, 18th overall at the Indiana Intercollegiates Championships, one of the best finishes in school history.

Sophomores Evan Franklin & Hunter Ingle both had a great start to the season by finishing 21st & 25th respectively at the Walt Crawford Open hosted by Eastern Illinois University in their season opener.

Other Region XII teams finding their way into the week #1 rankings include: Lansing #7, Maccomb #20, Cuyahoga #21, & Grand Rapids #24 for the women. For the men, Lansing at #7, Grand Rapids #13, Maccomb #20, & Muskegon #26.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday, September 30th at the Greater Louisville Classic hosted by the University of Louisville. The race will be held at E.P. Tom Sawyer Park, and current race time is set for noon! Go Trailblazers!

We Believe Sports

National Junior College Athletic Association Logo

At VU, we believe sports play an important role in the overall purpose of an educational institution. We support a well-rounded intercollegiate sports program for both men and women and have a strong presence in the NJCAA where we can claim several national championships. But we are equally proud of our individual All-American and All-American Academic athletes who have used their talent to continue their education at four-year colleges.
